Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Safety Specialist to join our heavy civil construction team. The Safety Specialist will be responsible for overseeing and promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations, and minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries on construction sites. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of heavy civil construction processes, a passion for safety, and the ability to engage with all levels of staff to enforce safety protocols and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safety Program Implementation: Develop, implement, and enforce site-specific safety programs in compliance with OSHA, state, and local regulations. Ensure that all safety protocols are followed on-site, particularly in heavy civil construction environments.
- Training & Education: Conduct safety training for workers, supervisors, and subcontractors. Ensure that all employees are adequately trained on hazard identification, safe work practices, and emergency response procedures.
- Safety Inspections: Perform regular safety audits and inspections on construction sites to ensure compliance with safety standards and identify potential hazards. Document inspections and follow up on corrective actions.
- Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, near-misses, and safety violations. Determine root causes, develop corrective actions, and ensure that safety incidents are documented thoroughly. Provide recommendations to prevent future incidents.
- Compliance Monitoring: Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and state safety laws. Keep up to date with changes to regulatory requirements and adjust safety protocols as necessary.
- Safety Reporting: Maintain safety documentation, including incident reports, safety inspection records, and compliance logs. Provide regular reports to management on safety performance and incidents.
- Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment: Conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for new and ongoing projects. Collaborate with project managers to identify potential hazards and mitigate risks.
- Safety Culture Promotion: Foster a culture of safety by actively engaging with workers and leadership. Encourage open communication regarding safety concerns and suggestions for improvement.
- Emergency Response Planning: Develop and implement emergency response procedures for various potential site emergencies. Coordinate drills and ensure preparedness for medical or fire emergencies, natural disasters, and other critical situations.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of safety experience in construction (genre of construction not specific)
- Spanish speaking/Bi-lingual
- OSHA 510 & 501
- CPR/1st Aid experience
- SSH or CSHO certification (Preferred)
- CHST Certification (Preferred)
