Description
We are currently seeking a Safety Manager that can work closely with the Operations Team to champion Southway’s safety culture and continually strive to improve our safety program’s quality, effectiveness, and support throughout the organization. The incumbent must remain current on local, state, and federal regulations as they pertain to construction safety and implement all best safety practices within the Company.
Essential Duties
- Thoroughly understand, administer, and enforce OSHA regulations and other federal, state, and local standards, and Company safety policies and procedures to establish and maintain a safe work environment.
- Support the project teams as they develop site-specific safety programs and safety orientations. Coordinate and work closely with the HR department to procure, deliver, and post all of the required safety and regulatory project signage and ensure that these posted materials are always kept up to date across all projects.
- Visit project sites on a regular basis to conduct job site safety audits and ensure safety goals are achieved. Immediately identify safety issues as they arise and assist others in immediate corrective action necessary to mitigate identified hazards.
- Utilize Procore for safety inspections and observations. Train project teams on how to use Procore for safety-related inspections.
- Utilize the data collected from Procore safety inspections and daily reports to continually evaluate our project team and trade partners’ safety performance, determine areas where additional training and education may be necessary, and develop and implement that training.
- Utilizing the data collected from Procore, monitor trade partner’s safety performance and advise senior management and preconstruction teams when a trade partner’s safety performance history warrants discussion and action.
- Attend all project safety kick-off meetings to review safety standards and procedures with our teams and set expectations before each project begins. Attend pre-construction, preparatory meetings, and initial inspections as requested to address critical safety concerns.
- Primary point of contact with OSHA and required to be present at all OSHA inspections. Responsible for taking the lead role for Southway in any Opening and Closing Conferences or safety-related inspections by authorities having jurisdiction. Responsible for all documentation related to these inspections including working with OSHA or other entities to attend any hearings to defend Southway and eliminate or reduce any penalties that result.
- Provide support to field staff in the event of an L&I site inspection and be present if possible.
- Responsible for engaging 3rd party safety companies when necessary and providing oversight to 3rd party safety inspectors being used on our projects when applicable.
- Responsible for all safety-related reporting to all government agencies and posting of related documentation at all offices and project sites as required.
- Responsible for maintaining and updating Southway’s corporate safety manual, corporate disaster plan, infectious disease prevention plan, etc. as necessary.
- Coordinate the procurement, inventory, and distribution of all safety equipment and materials as necessary to the project sites. Ensure that all sites have adequate first aid supplies.
- Administer Southway’s Safety Awards program and track the underlying metrics used to determine awards. Responsible for applying for industry safety award programs at the local and national level.
- Receive reports on workplace injuries, investigate the causes, ensure proper documentation is collected, and work with insurance carriers and corporate counsel to resolve claims when required. Analyze and recommend corrective action and potential training for all accidents.
- Maintain relationships with physician’s office, hospital staff, workers’ compensation insurance carrier, etc. as they pertain to a safety issue.
- Continually work with senior operations management team to improve trade partner safety language and requirements and ensure that those requirements are being met by trade partner on our projects.
- Assist construction divisions with proposals by providing all safety-related information and backup necessary.
- Conduct training for all Southway employees including but not limited to OSHA 10, OSHA 30, Silica, AHAs, New Employee & Intern Orientations, First Aid & CPR, etc. and provide documentation of that training.
- With the assistance of the human resources department, track safety-related training for all employees and ensure that every employee completes required training for their position. Ensure that all field employees are OSHA 30 certified.
- Create custom training programs and materials for bi-annual safety training for all field personnel focused on the hazards and issues encountered on our projects. Utilize safety data from Procore to identify what content will be most beneficial.
- Create training materials and agendas for regular company-wide safety stand-downs and coordinate these stand-downs with all project teams.
- Participate in local and national safety councils/organizations to further collaboration with peers on safety-related issues and be an active promoter of Southway’s safety culture within the construction industry.
- Have thorough knowledge and understanding of the EM 385 1-1 safety regulations.
- Develop and implement safety measures to maintain safe work environments.
- Oversee all documentation regarding workplace safety issues and concerns.
- Coach, mentor, and train employees on safety as it pertains to their job. Regularly communicate updates, reminders, and new information regarding Southway’s safety program and any relevant regulations to the Company as necessary.
- Lead or participate in the Southway Safety Committee.
- Train employees in the proper steps and actions to take when a safety incident occurs, and when there is an inspection by OSHA
- Liaison with external parties such as government-employed inspectors to facilitate evaluation of construction sites.
- Liaison for the Company in meetings with government bodies and other agencies on matters pertaining to workplace health and safety.
- Liaison for the Company for regular updates on legal regulations and program initiatives on workplace safety and environmental issues.
- Responsible for being point of contact for and developing relationships with owner/client and trade partner safety representatives.
- Ensure that all personal certifications are kept current and in good standing.
- Review blueprints, evacuation plans, designs for disposal systems, lighting and ventilation, and ensure there is no danger to the health or safety of workers or site visitors.
- Assist with preconstruction safety plans for trade partner as required.
- Coordinate actions to remove any dangerous appliances or chemicals on the project sites.
- Knowledgeable with environmental laws as they pertain to construction safety.
- Multi-state travel may be required to support all projects.
- Attend required corporate meetings, training programs, and seminars/webinars.
- Ensures strict adherence to ethics and compliance requirements throughout the Company.
- Adheres to the Company’s key values of quality, dependability, and integrity.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in safety management, ES&H management, construction management, or related discipline preferred.
- A minimum of ten (10) years in safety management.
- OSHA 30 hour certified and first aid/CPR certified.
- OSHA 500 instruction course required.
- Extremely knowledgeable with governmental ES&H standards, rules, and regulations and proficient with applying them to construction projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices and experience with conducting accident investigations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Procore project management software.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with all levels of the Company, federal and state representatives, Company insurance carrier, and outside vendors.
- Valid Driver’s License required.

Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary range: $100,000 - $135,000 based on qualifications and experience.
