ROTC Teacher (Navy) - Amarillo Independent School District

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.  Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:             

 To be eligible for certification, applicants must:

• Have at least 20 years of active duty service in the United States Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard as commissioned officers in grades W-2 through O-6, or as non-commissioned officers in grades E-6 through E-9; and
• Be in a retired or Fleet Reserve status not more than 6 years; or
• Have been approved for retirement benefits within the past 6 years under the Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA) with 15 to 19 years of active duty service in the Navy; or
• Be retired Naval Reserve members who are not yet receiving retirement benefits (i.e. “gray area” retirees); or
• Have been approved for retirement benefits from the United States Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard for a medical disability within the past 6 years; and
• Have attained the following educational degree requirements:
• Senior Naval Science Instructor - Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Naval Science Instructor - Associate's degree from accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or must obtain one within 5 years of initial employment as a result of the FY 2007 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Must meet appropriate criteria to be classified as a JROTC instructor in accordance with governing agency

Work Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals, video/instructional equipment

Posture: Frequent standing and walking; bending/stooping and reaching fully above head, pushing, pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; reaching

Lifting: Occasional lifting and carrying (less than 50 pounds)

Environment: Work inside from school, home, or location other than school building, may work outside; regular exposure to noise and computer monitors; may work prolonged or irregular hours; attend after school and nighttime activities occasionally; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise; occasional districtwide and statewide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to respond to needs in a timely manner in a high-stress environment

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 

Instructional Management

1. Develop and implement lesson plans for in person and virtual learning that fulfill the requirements of district’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
2. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
3. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
4. Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
5. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student groups involved.
6. Cooperatively meet and plan with other members of the staff to implement instructional goals, objectives, and methods in accordance with district requirements.
7. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
8. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s).
9. Employ the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.

Student Growth and Development

1. Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.
2. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formative and summative assessments and track progress through a variety of methods.
3. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and sponsor outside activities approved by the school.
4. Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
5. Create an in-person and virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Classroom Management and Organization

1. Establish effective classroom management and administer discipline in accordance with board policies, administrative regulations, and campus management plans.
2. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
3. Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

Communication

1. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
2. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing to confer with district personnel, students, and/or parents.
3. Communicate with students or parents on a regular basis via phone or video conference, email, or district-approved website.
4. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members through effective communication both verbally and written.
5. Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development

1. Participate in the district staff development program to improve job related skills.
2. Participate and positively contribute to grade level and campus level collaboration.
3. Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
4. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
5. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations.
6. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
7. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and professional development activities and serve on staff committees as required.

1. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
2. Perform such other tasks and accepts such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
3. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers including the Texas Educator Code of Ethics.

JROTC Duties

1. Maintain liaison with Navy representatives in academics, logistics, finance, and academic areas to ensure effective utilization of Navy resources.

3. Ensure the integration of the Navy JROTC program into the school environment by cultivating a positive atmosphere of cooperation with school, community, veteran's, and parental groups; participating in student information programs and public service actions; and ensuring Navy JROTC is established and remains a separate, integral academic and administrative department of the institution.
4. Ensure all courses meet minimum required hours of course content and organize a curriculum model to complement the local school curriculum plan. 
5. Ensure effective development of cadet leaders and supervise cadet operations and activities. Plan, organize, and direct corps organization.
6. Develop and supervise curriculum-in-action (CIA) trips, associated student fundraising and other co-curricular activities. NOTE: Co-curricular activities are a critical component of a successful Navy JROTC unit. Operation and supervision of co-curricular activities are a shared responsibility between the SASI and ASI(s).
7. Ensure each Navy JROTC student participates in the Navy JROTC curriculum as prescribed by the school, state, and the US Navy.
8. Follow Navy JROTC financial procedures and maintain financial accountability in accordance with Navy JROTC policy.
9. Participate in career improvement efforts such as in-service training, workshops, and advanced educational courses for professional development, as required by Navy JROTC, school, state, or federal directives or laws.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Supervises assigned instructional assistants and volunteers.
