As a Diesel Electrician, you will be an integral part of a dedicated group, responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing the intricate electrical systems found in locomotives of various ages and models.
Your primary responsibilities will include conducting scheduled inspections and performing maintenance tasks, ensuring that all electrical components are in optimal condition. Additionally, you will face the stimulating challenge of troubleshooting malfunctions in locomotive control circuits and components. By meticulously servicing Union Pacific's locomotives, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of customer goods.

Accountabilities
- Utilize schematics and location circuit plans to conduct scheduled electrical inspections and circuit tests on various components.
- Perform maintenance and repair of electrical components in locomotive cabs or electrical compartments, adhering to company and industry standards.
- Carry out equipment maintenance in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical systems and components to determine the root cause of problems.
- Coordinate work activities and plan the necessary steps to complete tasks, considering equipment requirements.
- Utilize shop machinery, equipment, and tools effectively and safely.
- Communicate technical information, job procedure recommendations, and other relevant work-related details verbally and in writing.
- Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
- Handle conflicting opinions diplomatically and maintain professionalism.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, operational protocols, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines.
- Fulfill any additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Required
- Possession of a valid driver's license
- Proficiency in keyboarding
- Competence in basic mathematics
- Background in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors, or possession of a current journeyman's electrical card
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and prints
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective information delivery to coworkers and supervisors
- Experience in comprehending and following instructions, such as operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents

Qualifications - Preferred
Completion of a recognized formal electrical training program (e.g., training provided by a community college, trade/vocational school, or military institution).
Possession of relevant certifications and/or licenses as an electrician.
An Associate's degree in electricity or electronics.
Demonstrated experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions, including professional, personal, or volunteer experience.
Proficiency in handling large motor generators and/or high-voltage circuitry.
Proven expertise in working with electronics and/or electro-mechanical systems.
Previous experience in an environment that necessitates the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection.
Familiarity with working around, on, and with moving heavy equipment, considering professional, personal, or volunteer experience.
Flexibility to work various shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
Ability and willingness to work in confined and/or small spaces.
Physical Requirements

- Mobility: Must have the ability to navigate uneven surfaces safely while maintaining balance.
- Visual Ability: Must possess normal color vision to detect and interpret various visual color signals and displays. Additionally, should be capable of determining the speed of moving objects at both close and distant ranges.
- Prolonged Standing and Sitting: Able to remain in a standing or sitting position for more than half of each workday. There will be opportunities to periodically change positions for comfort.
- Hand Coordination: Required to make frequent coordinated hand movements for tasks such as grasping, placing, or moving objects.
- Sensory Responsiveness: Should be able to respond promptly to unusual sounds and smells during inspections and testing.
- Lifting and Carrying: Occasionally required to push, pull, lift, and carry objects weighing up to 65 lbs.
- Physical Stamina: Must have the capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks, which may include occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.
- Climbing and Balancing: Ability to perform overhead work, climb, and maintain balance for accessing locomotives and equipment.
Work Conditions
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.

Working at heights: The job may involve tasks performed at elevations of 20 feet or higher.

Working with large equipment: The job may require working in proximity to and around substantial equipment, such as railcars, locomotives, and cranes. Candidates should be comfortable and capable of doing so.
