Job Summary
Marion Health RN Staff Educator is committed to making an impact in the lives of their patients and colleagues. Marion Health RN Staff Educators provide education to nursing staff, patients, and patient’s families in the clinical setting in order to enhance the overall performance of the Marion Health experience. Responsible for competency validation and supporting the development of the Family Birthing Center bedside nurses to achieve excellence through the delivery of evidenced-based nursing practice. Facilitates education and clinical practice to provide the highest quality of care with staff, patients, families and community. Collaborates with other healthcare disciplines, including the lactation team, FBC Unit Shift Managers, and Administrative Director in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula to improve clinical, safety, functional, cost and satisfaction outcomes at the department/unit level. As a role model of professional behavior, the RN Staff Educator is instrumental in creating a professional development nursing climate. Maintains current clinical knowledge and competence of trends in the Emergency Department’s care.
- In addition the RN Staff Educator will continue to work as an RN Staff as part of their assignment which includes being professionally engaged, possessing clinical expertise, a spirit of inquiry, embracing learning and fostering patient relationship. Accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation. Participates in decision making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates exercise sessions, lifestyle changes, and educational offerings for patient.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
- Current Indiana Registered Nurse License.
- Competency in 2 of 3 areas within Obstetric/Neonatal Nursing or must move to 2nd area of competency after a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
- Two (2) years of work experience that can be demonstrated to be applicable educational related duties listed in the job description.
- Five (5) years of work experience in Obstetric/Neonatal Nursing.
- CPR certification or must obtain at next available class upon hire.
- NPR certification or must obtain at next available class upon hire.
- Other advance life support may be required by unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Masters of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Previous clinical education experience.
- Experience in Obstetrical Regulatory Specifics such as Perinatal Core Measures.
- Competency in 3 areas within Obstetric/Neonatal Nursing.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
- Competent knowledge and skills to assess nursing care based on the developmental needs of the patients.
- High level of knowledge regarding clinical protocol, heath care policies, regulatory standards, governmental regulations, and reimbursement practices pertinent to the FBC Department.
- Clinical competency in assessment skills of both the new mom, the neonate/infant, along with clinical and research protocols, blood draw skills, and the follow up needed.
- Understanding of clinical concepts related to planning, organizing and supervising nursing care provided in the FBC.
- Ability to educate staff and providers to encourage the implementation of breastfeeding practices that provide the optimal level of care for infant feeding.
- Mathematical calculations and medication preparation and administration.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
- Developed computer skills and the ability to learn and proficiently perform patient care applications, e-charting, email and other standards applications related to the department operations and job function.
- Strong customer service skills, with special emphasis on patient centered care.
- Ability to promote compassion and a therapeutic environment.
- Ability to provide clinical reasoning; decision-making and critical thinking.
- Ability to use independent judgment and discretion.
- Ability to analytically evaluate problem situations in-depth and come to independent, appropriate conclusions.

- Basic working understanding of concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self and others.

- General awareness and understanding of legal implication of patient care activities and self-performance while performing job duties.
Working Conditions
- Typical hospital clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
- Work may be subject to interruptions and occasional high stress levels.
- Risk for occupational exposure to blood, body fluid and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
- Works with protected health information.
- Works in close proximity to patients and visitors.
- Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
- May be required to float to other departments based on Hospital census.
Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment
- Standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize patient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
- Use of computers and other standard office equipment.
- Pushing workstation on wheels to patient rooms.
- Lifting supplies and equipment typically found in clinical patient care areas.
- Operates equipment typically found in patient rooms.
- Must assist patients with mobility both in and out of bed.
