The new graduate registered nurse residency program is designed for incoming nurses who may not feel comfortable flying solo yet, want extra support from mentors and the team, want to try out different specialties, and for those who are not sure where they want to focus yet. This program is designed to provide mentorship, skills labs, and personalized development plans. After a designated period of time, the new graduate registered nurse may do rotations to specialty areas to determine their interest(s). This role is to allow new graduate registered nurses to start their career path at UNC Health Appalachian, under supervision, to gain valuable skills and knowledge until the new graduate has taken and passed their NCLEX exam to then function more independently.

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- The graduate nurse shall provide their manager and human resources with a copy of their NCLEX application and will inform management of the date that the NCLEX is scheduled.
- Previous experience as a registered nurse is not required.
- Previous health care experience in an acute or clinic setting is preferred.
- One-year of prior experience in a similar role with a similar scope is preferred.
- License/registry eligible with the North Carolina Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - BLS from the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire.
- All required certifications must be obtained within 1 year of hire date except Basic Life Support (BLS).

BLS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications must be obtained from American Heart Association.

- Competent in delivering safe and effective patient care within legal limits of licensure and hospital policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the continuum of nursing care provided in the patient care department.

- Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.

- Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergency situations.
- Continuous standing and walking long periods = to or greater than > 8 hours per shift.
- Speaking, reading, and writing, expanded > 8 hours per day.
- Exposed to vibration and cramped spaces >1 hour per day.
- Frequently mobilizes patients > 4 hours per day.

Benefits and Compensation
Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience - range is $30.50/hour or more (depending on education & experience). Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is a non-exempt position.
