Job Summary and Qualifications
Makes staff schedules and assignments providing adequate staffing to deliver quality patient care.
Uses time wisely between patient care and administration duties.
Plans for office time to complete administrative duties.
Reviews nursing practice and documentation.
Demonstrates flexibility in hours worked and in daily activities.
Manages staff overtime.
Utilizes PLUS report to manage staffing hours.
Assists Department Director with projects during free time.
Demonstrates creative and critical thinking skills/is able to come up with solutions for problems using creative measures.
Maintains a positive work environment as demonstrated by comments expressed by patients, staff or physicians. Completes paperwork for requisitions, check requests, educational support, personnel action forms etc.
- Demonstrates knowledge of normal and abnormal pathology related to clinical area.
- Performs procedures according to established policies and procedures.
- Adapts techniques to the unique needs of individual patients.
- Creates an atmosphere and conditions conducive to motivation of employees to work at optimal efficiency.
- Assists Director with the writing and reviewing of policies and protocols.
- Counsels/educates staff related to utilization of protocols.
- Encourages staff to establishyearly goals and objectives.
- Attends one seminar annually related to specialty, management or new technology.
- Consistently encourages the highest quality care from staff.
- Supports staff in achieving higher levels of expertise and clinical skill through regular and on-going in-servicing or study review.
Prepares performance appraisals in a non-prejudicial manner, using clearly written, accurate documentation and departmental standards.
Conducts performance appraisals with each employee according to written standards agreed upon with the Director.
Completes performance appraisals within the established time frame.
Maintains performance appraisal documentation throughout the year with a systematic, organized approach.
Annually reviews and revises competency checklists.
Assistsemployee in establishingrealistic goals and objectives.
Actively supports and provides resources to assistemployee in meeting goals and objectives.
- Demonstrates ability to address employee performance issues in a professional, tactful and effective manner.
Is responsible for developing, overseeing and updating the Department Orientation Program with the Department Director.
Reviews/revises skills checklist on an annual basis.
Supports the preceptor and assigns a designated preceptor for new employees.
Assures resource material in appropriate manuals are up to date.
Assists in writing job descriptions.
Encourages/assigns employees to attend classes that will enhance clinical development.
Maintains close follow-up with new employees/preceptors.
Conducts formal assessments following orientation to monitor employee progress.
Supports the formal orientation program.
Helps to evaluate staff for advancement on the clinical ladder.
Maintains active involvement in outcomes monitoring, and performance improvement for department.
Participates on PI-related teams and outcomes management teams when needed.
Ensures timely reporting of PI data.
Has a working knowledge of data collection systems utilized by staff.
Works on at least one joint interdepartmental project.
Ensures monthly reporting of PI information at appropriate committees.
Is constantly alert to the need for improvements in departmental operations as well as lab interaction with other departments.
Suggests potential PI team projects.
Is willing to participate in other hospital/departmental initiatives.
Demonstrates ability to interact with data management systems, and submit appropriate reports.
Coaches staff on how to do PI projects, and assist staff in accurate, timely and organized reporting.
Demonstrates awareness and actively address performance criteria utilized by various governmental agencies.
Recommends changes as needed based on findings of PI or outcomes monitoring reports
Prepares or coordinates the submission of monthly procedural reports.
Is responsible for keeping files up to date.
Ensures patient charges are entered correctly on a daily basis.
Reviews charge master and submits changes as requested by Fiscal Services (or delegates the responsibility to the appropriately trained staff.
Reports are submitted in a timely manner.
Ensures charges are entered in a timely manner.
Notices trends in monthly stats that suggest a need for change or re-evaluation and recommends such to Director.
Develops strong understanding of coding process and assist department in issues related to coding, re-imbursement.
Actively addresses supply costs and works closely with materials management to control costs.
Develops own reporting tools.
Keeps current with new technology and procedures.
When appropriate, introduces new technology and/or ideas to physicians and staff.
Provides for ongoing development of staff by scheduling in-services, seminars, CE programs and participates on committees or projects such as Outcomes Management.
Remains current with policy and hospital changes.
Assumes personal responsibility for professional development and continuing education.
Plans and presents at least 2 staff in-services annually.
Plans and holds monthly staff meetings with the Director.
Maintains awareness of cost to benefit ratio when evaluating new procedures and technology.
Takes the initiative in scheduling classes for management learning opportunities.
Encourages staff involvement in continuing education.
Maintains communication with other like departments.
Seeks additional certifications.
Encourages staff to seek additional certifications.
Participates in the planning of in-house certification or clinical development/training.
Performs all necessary actions to ensure the department meets standards as set by The Joint Commission and other healthcare regulatory agencies:
Works to ensure that accreditation requirements are met.
Encourages physician and staff input.
Updates director regularly on factors impacting the ability of the department to meet or maintain accreditation requirements.
Stays abreast of changes in the environment that may impact the ability of the department to meet standards.
Notifies Directorin a timely manner.
Meets standards during announced and unannounced inspections or audits.
Demonstrates strong awareness of issues related to standard of care.
Understands the function of each department and departmental interrelations in regard to providing patient care.
