About the Job
The Rajan laboratory in the Basic Sciences Division at Fred Hutch uses multidisciplinary approaches to study dysfunctions in fat to brain communication underlies obesity. Our goal is to understand how fat communicates nutrient status to the brain, and how chronic nutrient surplus disrupts this communication. Examining this complex question in a simple model system, such as the fruit fly, will provide fundamental insights that can be leveraged to tackle obesity.
This is an ideal position for a recent graduate who wants to gain an intense research experience before pursuing graduate and/or medical school. Responsibilities:The Research Technician will primarily carry out an independent research project in a under direct supervision of a staff scientist that involves using in vitro cell culture systems including human primary cells, imaging, ELISA, biochemistry (western blots, immunoprecipitation) and molecular biology (cloning, PCR).
Other responsibilities include general lab maintenance (ordering, caring for Drosophila flies, fly media preparation), and other duties as needed.
Qualifications:
- BA/BS in a scientific field required. Must have scientific knowledge in the area of study and basic laboratory skills.
- Independent research experience in addition to school lab experience is usually necessary.
- Reliability is essential. Self-motivation and curiosity are key to success in candidate selection and for performance in this position.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to be a string team player.
- To be successful in this position, the technician must have scientific curiosity, a high level of self-motivation, the ability to take instruction and correction and to follow directions, good organizational skills, the ability to work and think independently, and wants to stay at least two years.
The hourly pay range for this position is from $22.21 to $26.91 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
