Fauna Bio is using computational and functional pipelines to develop therapeutics from the extreme adaptive traits of mammals. Our expertise in translational medicine, hibernation biology and cross mammalian biology/bioinformatics make us uniquely positioned to take advantage of the wealth of genomic information becoming available across a broad array of species for the purposes of novel drug discovery. Our larger goal is to improve the rate at which discoveries can be translated to humans by leveraging conserved biology across species.
Job Description:
We aim to hire a technically skilled lab manager at Fauna Bio for onsite duties in Oshkosh, WI. The primary function of their role will be the duties of a laboratory manager. This includes ensuring research compliance through maintaining records and protocols, and ordering supplies needed to facilitate continued function of the laboratory. The secondary function of their role will be similar to that of a research technician; assisting with experimental studies in a laboratory setting. This includes data collection and animal care.
Responsibilities:
Laboratory manager (70-60%)
- Orders laboratory, research, and surgical supplies. This includes ordering and facilitating the arrival of research animals, and refilling liquid nitrogen.
- Monitors program budgets and expenditures.
- Maintains and develops compliance protocols to the standards of the Universities of Wisconsin (IACUC, IBC, USDA, AAALAC, etc.).
- Work with our animal and research technician(s) to assist with animal care, husbandry, and routine data collection.
- Data and procedural documentation oversight including electronic lab notebook management.
- Laboratory manager duties may include "on call" situations in which the candidate will be required to attend to off hours duties. For example, last-minute shipments or receiving shipments with early morning arrival times.
Research Technician (30-40%)
- Assists in routine surgical/animal procedures.
- Performs routine animal monitoring and assists our Animal Care Lead as needed with daily care and use of laboratory rodent species.
- Assists and/or leads tissue collections.
- Performs drug/compound administrations.
- Assisting our Animal Care Lead as needed with care and use of laboratory rodent species.
- May be required to cover off hour experimental needs periodically. For example, weekend treatment administration.
The ideal candidate has experience in animal use compliance and managing in a laboratory and is familiar with conducting rigorous in vivo experiments. Experience with hands-on animal research is required. The ideal candidate is also a reliable communicator, works well with team consisting of diverse background knowledge, an independent problem-solver, quick to adapt to change, highly organized, and passionate about studying translational animal adaptations for the betterment of human health.
Working Conditions:
The Lab Manager is expected to work in a laboratory environment, which may involve exposure to chemicals, biological agents, and other hazards. Safety protocols must be strictly followed. The position may also require occasional evening or weekend work to accommodate research needs and equipment maintenance. This role includes opportunity for travel (approximately 1-2 times a year) for company team-building activities or attending scientific meetings.
