The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, housed in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Industrial Hygienist.
**POSITION PURPOSE**
This position provides advanced applied industrial hygiene services through the DEOHS Field Research and Consultation Group to PNW regional businesses, labor entities, government agencies and health care providers.
The Research Industrial Hygienist is one of four staff positions supporting the DEOHS Field Research and Consultation Group (FRCG). The FRCG is a state-funded industrial hygiene consultative service housed in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS). The Industrial Hygienists work directly with business and labor clients in the field as they respond to requests for assistance related to potential workplace hazards and solutions. Complexities include performing assessments with industry partners in the field, independently assessing the concerns and applying one's education and experience to recommend solutions while also being familiar with WA Labor and Industry regulation and procedures given the workplace environment. The Research Industrial Hygienist has extensive interaction with the business and labor communities and it is important that the position represent the UW, department and Field Group with the highest level of quality.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Conduct field investigations of workplace exposure problems: The Research Industrial Hygienist will work independently and as part of a team of four Field Group Research Industrial Hygienists responding to requests from regional businesses and labor groups regarding workplace exposure concerns. The case load is typically 50 consultations per year shared between the four industrial hygienists. This junior position Research Industrial Hygienist will work under the general supervision of the Director and senior level staff, with business management and workers to assess the problem directly in the workplace; query management and workers directly about the potential hazard; design field data collection logistics and data collection methodology; conduct field data collection using complex measurement equipment to collect samples (air, dust, etc); apply education, experience and training to determine cause and extent of problem; independently analyze laboratory and other data; write a report for the requesting entity summarizing the scope of the concern and recommending prevention and intervention measures that may be instituted. The entire process from receipt of request, conducting field work, and responding back to the business verbally and in writing is conducted with decreasing oversight from the Director. (65%)
Contribute to field research projects with departmental faculty: The Research Industrial Hygienist, working under the mentorship of senior level staff will help with faculty field-based research projects. In this role, the Research Industrial Hygienists partner with the faculty and senior research staff to identify target industries and health and safety concerns; develop hypotheses to test prevention and intervention methods in the target population, methodology, and statistical implications for subject recruitment; perform subject recruitment and data collection; conduct sample collection, subject recruitment and testing; help analyze and interpret results using common statistical programs; draft industry reports and contribute to peer reviewed publications. (25%)
Help guide graduate industrial hygiene students: The Field Group also serves as a widely used departmental teaching laboratory for graduate students. The Director of the Field Group, Martin Cohen, serves as a faculty instructor for industrial hygiene courses and provides applied learning opportunities in the field. The Research Industrial Hygienist will participate as a member of a team mentoring and guiding graduate students in the data collection, field work and subsequent reports and training material development. These activities rely on his or her expertise and experience, as well as their ability to mentor students who may be training to work in a similar field. (10%)
**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:**
+ Master's Degree in Exposure Sciences, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field.
+ Minimum of one or fewer years experience in field-based industrial hygiene exposure assessment and control evaluation, industrial hygiene consulting, or compliance activities. **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:**
+ Required to exercise prudent and independent professional judgment, excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to deal effectively with the public and labor groups. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Interest in pursuing Certification in Industrial Hygiene.Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. **Application Process:** The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
