About the Job
Responsibilities
**Summary:**
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester is seeking an individual with a Bachelors or Masters degree in Optics, Physics or Electrical Engineering to join the Laser Technology Development group. The successful candidate will be responsible for development related to state-of-the-art fiber devices for precision pulse shaping and timing. The candidate will also serve as part of the laser operations team for the MTW Facility. Relevant experience is required in the development and operation of fiber optic systems, solid-state lasers, and optical diagnostics. Strong computer skills in optical and laser design are required. The ideal candidate should have a broad knowledge of optical physics, and needs to be able to work as part of a team and manage multiple priorities.
**Background information:**
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester is a unique national resource with a premier high-power laser facility for research in inertial confinement fusion (ICF), high-energy-density physics (HEDP) and basic science. LLE is home to both the OMEGA and OMEGA EP Laser Systems. OMEGA is a 60-beam solid-state laser system capable of delivering 30-kJ, nanosecond UV pulses to a target. LLE also operates the OMEGA EP laser system, a picosecond, petawatt laser that augments the capabilities of OMEGA to carry out a broad range of physics research. LLE sponsors an active program of developing advanced solid-state laser systems, electro-optic systems and laser diagnostics, including collaborative opportunities with national laboratories and international ICF facilities. LLE has a graduate student program that supports approximately fifty students for collaborative research with other departments at the University of Rochester across a broad range of optics, physics and material science topics. Information regarding LLE can be found at www.lle.rochester.edu . The University of Rochester is an equal opportunity employer.
The Laser Technology Development Group is responsible for laser system research and development at LLE. Current group research and development activities include: high-average power solid-state and fiber laser systems, mode-locked lasers, ultrafast laser systems and diagnostics, optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers, arbitrary temporal pulse shaping with sub-nanosecond resolution, beam shaping and conditioning, and other related technologies. In addition, the LTD group is responsible for building, operating, and maintaining the MTW Laser Facility that contains two midscale lasers spanning multiple rooms for laser development and science experiments.
The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University’s mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create – and Make the World Ever Better. In support of our values and those of our society, the University is committed to not discriminating on the basis of age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, military/veteran status, national origin, race, religion/creed, sex, sexual orientation, citizenship status, or any other status protected by law.
