Overview
The Research Assistant I will assist in the execution of scientific studies interrogating cell-type specific epigenetic mechanisms in the developing brain after early life exercise, and other environmental experiences. The Research Assistant I is able to help with day-to-day operations of the lab, carry out or assist other personnel with experiments, assist with collecting and analyzing data, and supervising the work of undergraduates.
Responsibilities
1. Help maintain animal colonies, which includes: obtain samples for genotyping, carry out PCR-based genotyping, maintain accurate records of genotypes and breeding, and manage supply of breeders and mice required for experiments.2. Carry out experiments in rodents, using experimental treatments and surgical techniques, post-operative care, behavioral studies and euthanasia, in accordance with ACUC-approved protocols and the Guide for the Care and Use of Experimental Animals.3. Carry out studies using methods such as histopathology, immunohistochemistry, or single molecule fluorescence in-situ hybridization: prepare tissue sections and process according to protocols.4. Oversee undergraduates in data collection, analysis theory and implementation.5. Analyze data with Microsoft Excel and statistics packages such as GraphPad Prism and SPSS.6. Assist with the design and planning of experiments, using above/other methods.7. Help prepare publications, grants, presentations, and posters.8. Work cooperatively with others in the laboratory to carry out collaborative research.9. Enhance professional growth and development through attending conferences, educational programs, inservice meetings, workshops, seminars.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:• Training on animal surgical techniques and post-operative care is preferred.
EDUCATION:• BA/BS required. Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or subfield preferred.
EXPERIENCE:• Previous laboratory training and experience in any field of science is required.• Ability to learn new skills on the job including rodent behavior tasks, rodent surgeries, histology, setting up running wheel apparatuses, maintain low stress environment for pups.• Must possess knowledge of and experience with chemical and neurobiological techniques.• Two years’ experience with molecular biology, histological and histochemical techniques is preferred.
