About the Job
The Research Assistant I carry out scientific studies of cellular mechanisms of neuronal injury in the developing brain with Dr. S. Ali Fatemi in the Neurogenetics Laboratory. The Research Assistant I is able to read and understand scientific literature, carry out experiments, assist with planning experiments, assist with analyzing data and make presentations to others about the work. A high level of responsibility, flexibility, and independence are required to carry out the diverse duties of this position.
Responsibilities:1. Manage colony of transgenic mice: obtain samples for genotyping, carry out PCR-based genotyping, maintain accurate records of genotypes and breeding, and manage supply of breeders and mice required for experiments.
2. Carry out experiments in rodents, using experimental treatments and surgical techniques, post-operative care, behavioral studies and euthanasia, in accordance with ACUC-approved protocols and the Guide for the Care and Use of Experimental Animals.
3. Carry out studies using methods such as histopathology, immunohistochemistry, or in-situ hybridization: prepare tissue sections and process according to protocols.
4. Assist in acquisition and analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging studies in rodents.
5. Use computerized microscopy and image analysis systems to collect data from the experiments; analyze data with Microsoft Excel and statistics packages such as SPSS or Statview.
6. Assist with the design and planning of experiments, using above/other methods.
7. Work cooperatively with others in the laboratory to carry out collaborative research.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Training on animal surgical techniques and post-operative care is preferred.
EDUCATION:
• BA/BS required. Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or subfield preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
• Previous laboratory training and experience in any field of science is required.
• Must possess knowledge of and experience with chemical and neurobiological techniques.
• Two years’ experience with molecular biology, histological and histochemical techniques is preferred.
