About the Job
As Research Assistant II you will play a critical role to collect field and lab-data in a large-scale national climate-smart agriculture partnership project. The project aims to quantify soil carbon, soil health, and ecosystem services under various climate-smart management practices. Your primary role will entail independently collect soil samples, spectral data, and geographic coordinates at sampling sites on farms that grow specialty crops in Florida and out-of-state. Travel is required for this position. Reliable handling of samples, spectral instruments, and data will be critically important. An individual in this position possesses excellent skills to communicate efficiently with project members, supervisor, and growers/farmers. A successful applicant should enjoy the outdoors to engage in field sampling under different weather conditions as well as spectral data collection in the laboratory and basic data handling/entry. A proactive attitude to coordinate travel to field sites, to work independently performing assigned tasks, and to meet project milestones are expected.

Job Description: | The incumbent will independently and meticulously conduct research techniques in field. Navigate and drive to farmers/growers fields. Collect soil samples and spectral data of soil samples with a portable and lab-based spectroradiometer. Use of a GPS to collect geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) at sampling sites. Troubleshoot equipment issues and make appropriate adjustments. Collect additional field observations (e.g., soil and crop images). Data entry/upload of soil attribute, spectral data, and field observations into a database. Determine best method for data integration from multiple data strains to support model development. Must understand data collected from various instruments used in the study of soil. Responsible for the data section of quarterly reports to granting agency and other project milestones. Independently conduct laboratory procedures including spectral scanning of soil samples using a lab-based spectroradiometer. Communicate with project participants on logistics and timing of soil data collection at sites in specialty crops. Communicate with farmers/growers to access sampling sites UFGO: Travel authorizations, entry of receipts, and reimbursement. Manage lab and field supply inventory for multi-year national study. Mailing of soil samples to laboratory. Support collection of greenhouse gas emission data. |
Expected Salary: | $45,600 - $48,000 |
Minimum Requirements: | A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of experience; a masters degree and two or more years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. |
Preferred Qualifications: | BS or MS in soil science, ecology, natural resources, environmental sciences or related discipline. Experience in soil sampling and proficiency in databases (e.g., Excel spreadsheets and SQL) |
