SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to provide technical and coordination skills in carrying out various research projects and coordinates procedures and performs technical laboratory duties in accordance with general and/or specific plans.
Research Assistant II opportunity in the Anesthesiology & PeriOp Med - Research department. Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a biology-related disciplinary and at least one-year experience in scientific or experimental research work. Experience in basic rodent surgeries, biochemistry/molecular biology assays (wet lab experience) is preferred.
Shift: 8am-5pm
KEY FUNCTIONS
1. Research Activities
Conduct animal behavioral experiments, routine survival surgeries, and utilize surgical techniques to harvest tissues, such as spinal cord, brain and dorsal root ganglion.
Perform basic lab techniques such as telemetry, blood pressure and sympathetic nerve recordings in whole animals, and in tissue slice preparation.
Perform other laboratory techniques such as animal perfusion, immunocytochemistry, cell culture, and western blots.
Collaborates or assists with supervisor and senior research staff with preparation of reports and grant requests.
Statistically analyze data generated from experiments and present at laboratory meetings.
Contributes intellectually on research projects and future directions.
2. Research Safety & Compliance
Responsible for animal purchasing and inventory along with supply ordering and inventory. Maintain records of all purchase order requisitions.
Maintenance of laboratory equipment; must understand the correct operation of all laboratory equipment and the ability to follow written instructions in operation manuals is essential.
Handles, stores, and disposes of chemical hazardous materials and biohazardous materials in procedure specified to meet MDA safety guidelines.
Maintain clean and neat work area in laboratory to ensure the most efficient functioning of the lab and a pleasant work environment for self and others.
3. Interpersonal Skills, communication, learning skills
Communication with faculty and staff within and outside the laboratory.
Work with others in a highly collaborative manner.
Assist other lab members with ongoing experiments that have a priority designated by the Principal Investigator.
Instruct other technicians, students and staff members on scientific protocols currently used in the laboratory.
Willingness to proactively learn new techniques such as molecular biology techniques, epigenetics, and biochemical methods.
EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.
Preferred: Master's degree with major course work in the one of the basic sciences and or medical field.
EXPERIENCE
Required: One-year experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience is required with preferred degree.
Preferred: Experience in basic rodent surgeries, biochemistry/molecular biology assays, wet lab.
