Research Assistant I- Umemori Lab - Boston Children's Hospital
Boston, MA
About the Job
In the brain, information processing occurs at synapses, and defects in synapse development underlie many neuropsychiatric diseases. The Umemori Lab is therefore interested in the mechanisms that regulate the development and function of synaptic circuits. Using in vitro and in vivo systems, we identify the manner and molecular logic by which specific and functional synaptic circuits are established in the mammalian brain and provide clues for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders associated with abnormal synapse development. We use molecular and cellular, mouse genetic, imaging, physiological, behavioral, and optogenetic techniques.

This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:
- Experiments: In vitro and in vivo neuroscience experiments: experiments may include brain dissection and sectioning, immunohistochemistry, microscopy/imaging, molecular and cell biology, rodent surgery, optogenetics, and behavioral tests.
- Lab duty: Genotyping of mice by PCR, mouse colony management, preparation of general solutions, buffers, gels, etc.
- Ordering and lab support: Order and maintain lab supplies, materials, and equipment. Unpack received orders and arrange returns of damaged or incorrect orders. Maintain a clean, safe, and functional laboratory. Assist the PI in preparing reports, abstracts, and publications of data.
- According to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules, performs a variety of routine laboratory experiments and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy.
- Assists in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected.
- Performs the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:
- Maintains records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.
- Maintains equipment, lab area, and supplies in a neat professional manner.
- Sterilize and clean glassware, and prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.Inventories supplies, alerts supervisor to needed supplies, or mixes standard reagents.
- Processes order for supplies and/or animals.
- Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive, and toxic materials.
- Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
- Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.
- Attends courses, lectures, and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.
- Contributes to the team within and between departments and organizations.
- A bachelor's degree in STEM with knowledge of Neuroscience.
- Some laboratory experience is preferred, as well as experience with rodents and the above-described experiments.
- A two-year commitment is preferred.
