Job Summary:
This individual will work in the Roden and Glazer laboratories at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The overall theme of research in the Roden laboratory is mechanisms underlying variability in response to drug therapy, with a particular focus on therapies used to treat cardiac arrhythmias https://medsites.vumc.org/rodenlab. The Glazer laboratory is a biology lab that performs high-throughput studies of mutations that cause arrhythmias and other diseases www.andrewglazerlab.com.
After training, this individual will perform under supervision a variety of tasks, including molecular biology, cell culture, and lab management tasks.
• Perform under minimal supervision a wide variety of complex tasks requiring
practical understanding of scientific techniques and advanced knowledge of
scientific theory.
• Perform a variety of basic molecular biology protocols including: PCR,
plasmid mutagenesis and cloning, DNA extraction, and DNA sequencing.
• Generate mutations in disease genes for high-throughput study.
• Perform tissue culture protocols, primarily to create and study cell lines
expressing mutant genes.
• Assist colleagues with lab supply orders and other managerial tasks.
• The applicant will report directly to Drs. Roden or Glazer in one-on-one weekly
meetings, participate in group meetings, and work closely with other lab
members.
Rotating Weekend Schedule (1-2 hours required) every 3 weeks to take care of cells

The mission of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is to understand the mechanisms of drug action in humans in order to improve therapeutics. One of the oldest and largest divisions of its kind, our division bridges basic and clinical sciences through translational research and robust training in clinical pharmacology.
Through research, the division attempts to understand how basic molecular, biochemical and cellular processes are altered in various pathological conditions, and seeks to identify novel therapeutic interventions for human diseases.
• Faculty publish extensively, with their work appearing in prestigious journals,
including Nature, the New England Journal of Medicine, Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences and the Journal of Clinical Investigation
• In addition to conducting state-of-the-art research, faculty lead many
institutional and national efforts to train clinical and translational
investigators, and to support infrastructure for translational research
In recognition of their contributions, six faculty have been elected to the Associate of American Physicians.
The division’s dynamic fellowship programs are designed to rigorously train individuals interested in pursuing careers in clinical pharmacology. With more than 27 fellows in the program, Vanderbilt ranks as a leader in the training of clinical pharmacologists for academia, industry and government. Since its founding in 1963, the division has trained over 350 fellows, which is more than any other clinical pharmacology program in the world.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Under minimal supervision, plan, conduct and evaluate experiments and assays of varying complexity.
• Plan and coordinate experiments in conjunction with Principal Investigator (PI).
• Understand and follow experimental protocols (may include animal handling, tissue culture, etc.)
• Record, compile, interpret, and communicate data/results.
• Follow University safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic material, and/or carcinogens)
• Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions.
• Prepare, operate and troubleshoot equipment in experimental procedures.
• Recommend equipment and supplies needed for research projects.
• Read and follow all equipment manuals.
• Maintain and repair equipment according to manufacturer and university guidelines.
• Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments.
• Maintain inventories.
• Maintain sterile conditions as required.
• Prepare reagents.
• Assist PI in modifying procedures and techniques.
• Recognize problems and suggest solutions, assist in modifications.
• Recommend improvements to established techniques and/or protocols.
• Maintain personal knowledge of scientific trends through literature reviews, attendance at meetings, conferences and seminars.
• Provide appropriate written/oral documentation of experiments
• Prepare research progress reports.
• Analyze and summarize test results.
• Preparation and oral presentation of data as required
• Assist in the effective operation of the laboratory.
