Future Salary Increases
June 2024 – 6.88% increase to base pay (2.75% Across-the-Board + 4.13% Market Increase)
In addition to the base salary, employees receive:
- $850 annual uniform allowance
- $300 annual safety footwear reimbursement allowance (may accrue up to 3 years’ worth of reimbursement)
- Overtime pay for working County-observed holidays
- At least 2 paid days per year to attend Continuing Education Unit (CEU) classes
- Reimbursement of Registered Veterinary Technician license renewal
THIS POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR APPOINTMENT AT STEP 1, $54,496.00 ANNUALLY.
County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5.

HIRING PROCESS AND TIMELINE:
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
- Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
- Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
- Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A current registration in the state of California as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
Note: One (1) year of experience in an animal hospital and/or public animal control agency is highly desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed outdoors and in animal shelter environments in varying temperatures; exposure to excessive noise, animal waste, dead animals, sewage, and zoonotic diseases; may work shifts, weekends and holidays at animal shelters throughout the County of San Diego.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
EVALUATION PROCESS
Qualified candidates will be placed on a nine (9) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
