The ER Registered Nurse will provide onsite Emergency Room Services at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) located at 2002 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX. Providing healthcare to patients who urgently need treatment so that they can stabilize their vital signs and limit pain and discomfort, giving timely care to their patients in a fast-paced environment. Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Identifying the needs of a patient, filling out charts and intake paper and collecting information and samples so they can run tests.
- Triage incoming patients based on level of injury or illness
- Immediately stabilize incoming patients
- Administer medication as instructed by physicians
- Start intravenous lines, and set broken bones
- Perform tracheotomies and intubations
- Give patients stitches and sutures
- Create and maintain incoming patient records
- Work with team of emergency staff to help patients
- Help transfer stable patients to other wings
- Carry out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasks
- Care and management of peripheral and central lines, including PICC lines
- Measure vital signs/hemodynamic monitoring including Pain (the 5th Vital Sign), pulse oximetry, etc.
- Perform wound care including dressing changes (sterile and non-sterile), and obtaining wound cultures as necessary
- Perform non-acute and/or acute ventilator care, if needed
- Perform suctioning including oral, nasogastic, and tracheostomy
- Perform deep suctioning, which may include obtaining specimens
- Assess for and administer tube feedings
- Assist with routine urinary and bowel elimination including catheters, colostomies, and digital stimulation
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Licensed in any State, Territory, Commonwealth of the U.S. or D.C.
- BLS and/or ACLS
- Willing to work 12- hour shifts and be available for weekends, holidays, evenings and night shifts
- 1 year of experience (within the past 5 years) in Emergency Department
- Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills
- Must be able to perform in a stressful and high paced environment without physical limitations.
- Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities
- Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10ft
- Must be able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
