Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree in science or medical laboratory sciences required. At least 5 years of progressive healthcare/laboratory management experience. Preferred: Master’s degree in business or healthcare administration preferred. ASCP or comparable certification is preferred. About Us Newton Wellesley Hospital (NWH) is a 330-bed community hospital and a member of the Mass General Brigham (MGB) system. The Department of Pathology at Newton-Wellesley Hospital provides testing for a busy emergency department, surgical and GI services, inpatient population, adjacent MGH Cancer center, and a large outreach sector including primary care, internal medicine, OBGYN practices, and medical specialties. The team manages an annual volume of 31,000 surgical cases and 48,000 cytology cases, along with 1.93 million billable tests across Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Blood Bank services. 3,400 transfusions are performed each year. NWH laboratory is part of MGB Enterprise Pathology, which ensures the efficient and effective delivery of laboratory testing across MGB hospitals with the mission to advance strategic collaborations in clinical excellence, quality, access and cost efficiency. Schedule/Location: This role is an in-person position with oversight of laboratory departments staffing all three shifts to support the acute care hospital. The Opportunity: Reporting to the Mass General Brigham Executive Director of Community Pathology, and in close collaboration with the NWH President/COO and NWH Chair of Pathology, the Director of Laboratory and Surgical Pathology is responsible for leadership, financial stewardship, and operations of all phlebotomy and laboratory sections at Newton Wellesley Hospital. The position is also responsible for contribution and collaboration with Enterprise Pathology strategic initiatives. The role includes operations, people management/human resources, and budget oversight. The role requires strong management skills and a collaborative approach in working together with staff and institutional leaders to ensure that the laboratory and pathology operations meet the needs of local clinicians while also aligning with enterprise standards and approach. Primary Responsibilities include: - Directs, oversees, and coordinates the technical and support services of all sections of the Laboratory and Surgical Pathology to promote efficiency of operation and efficient utilization of personnel. Analyzes and evaluates the department's needs, laboratory services functions/practices and reporting and record keeping; researches new trends and developments and introduces to laboratory leadership team. - Maintains effective working relationship with the Chair, Department of Pathology. Meets regularly with the Chair to ensure consistent communication relative to daily laboratory operations and relates to each Pathologist regarding their area of laboratory specialty. - Develops and implements departmental policies in concert with the Chair. Informs managers, supervisors and employees of new departmental and hospital policies. - Represents Newton Wellesley Hospital in enterprise pathology committees and workgroups. Provides feedback, advocates for the local needs, and executes on enterprise initiatives for standardization, patient experience, and efficiency. - Represents the Laboratory and Surgical Pathology in meetings with other administrative personnel in the hospital. - Supervises the laboratory leadership team with input from the Chair and section medical directors. - In partnership with MGB Pathology Quality/Safety/Compliance, D and Lab Safety Officer, develops and implements, in concert with the Laboratory Safety Officers, implements policies, procedures and techniques relative to safety, infection and environmental control standards, and other regulatory requirements to ensure necessary accreditations. Inspects department on an ongoing basis for compliance with established standards to promote efficiency, health, and safety of staff and patients; takes corrective action as necessary. Participates in the departmental Quality Improvement Committee. In conjunction with MGB Pathology Quality. - Coordinates and collaborates with medical/nursing staff pertinent to requisitioning and scheduling of laboratory procedures, patient preparation, and report findings to ensure effective management of patient care. Demonstrates competency in the field of healthcare administration and laboratory science and keeps current in knowledge of the fields of laboratory medicine. Acts as an educational resource and is available for consultation to medical, nursing, and other health care personnel. - Establishes, maintains and monitors department records and reporting systems and patient records. Develops and implements the patient charge system for the department rendered in conjunction with Fiscal department. - Organizes, maintains and monitors department supplies to ensure adequate stock at all times. Evaluates and justifies equipment and supply needs; meets with vendors to discuss purchase of supplies and equipment; negotiates contracts and purchasing agreements and initiates and approves purchase requests for operating supplies and services for all laboratory cost centers. - Ensures effective management of the Laboratory and Surgical Information Systems, including modifications, enhancements, functional changes, and upgrades. - Selects, trains/orients laboratory supervisory or administrative personnel. Develops standards of performance and monitors and supervises staff; evaluates performance and initiates personnel actions, such as promotion or disciplinary action. Resolves employee grievances. Encourages professional development of department personnel through in-service education or outside conferences. - Consults with MGB Pathology Community Executive Director, Chair, Department of Pathology, laboratory leadership team, and administrators concerning capital expenditures, and ensures department operates within allocated funds. Develops and recommends department operating budget and monitors operating expenses and revenue within department versus budget. Prepares monthly budget variance summary reports. Develops, implements and maintains policies,procedures and objectives for department's activities, needs and problems. Maintains department's reports and records; collects statistics for administration and regulatory purposes. - Oversees the development of educational programs and continuing education of the laboratory clinical staff. - Participates as requested in pathology workforce development efforts for MGB. - May be required to perform technical duties of medical technologist during emergency situations. - May supervise one or more laboratory sections during the absence of a supervisor. - Performs other related duties as required.
