Job Title: Registered Nurse - OR Circulator
Reports To: Operating Room Nurse Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: A Circulating Nurse is a Registered Nurse who plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates nursing care to patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during operative or other invasive procedures. The Circulating Nurse works collaboratively with other perioperative professionals (surgeons, anesthesia professionals, surgical technologists) to meet patient needs and serve as the patient’s advocate.
- Focuses on patient priorities with a kind and caring attitude to ensure quality care.
- Ensures that the operating room is clean and safe for the patient
- Ensures all equipment is functioning correctly
- Works side by side with scrub tech to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room.
- Introduces self to patient, reviews chart for pertinent information and assists Anesthesia with the transfer of the patient to the OR
- Performs Time Out Verification before procedure with surgeon and anesthesia personnel
- Maintains the safety of the patient during the procedure
- Maintains appropriate documentation as required
- Ensures accurate collection, storage and documentation of all specimens
- Maintains operating room with appropriate supplies for the procedure
- Charges for all supplies used during procedure
- Ensures that the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure
- Assists the Anesthesia personnel with positioning of the patient and anticipates their needs
- Maintains correct surgical count
- Performs skin prep when required
- Applies safety straps on the patient
- Assists in applying dressings
- Assists in the transfer of patients to the PACU
- Communicates pertinent information to PACU
- Assists with timely and efficient turnover of operating room
- Restocks supplies and equipment at the end of the day
- Updates and maintains preference cards
Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must possess a current NYS Registered Professional Nursing license. Must be certified in BLS.
Working Conditions:
Is subject to frequent interruptions. Is involved with patients, personnel, visitors, government agencies under all conditions and circumstances. Communicates with medical staff, department personnel and other staff. Working beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily, when necessary. Language / Reasoning abilities / Math
Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, instructions and procedure manuals. Able to solve practical problems. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to give correct dosage of medications.
Computer Skills
Basic computer skills. Knowledge of the Electronic Medical Record.
