Hours of Work: M-F, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm/Employment Category: Regular, Full-Time
PURPOSE
The Regional Geoscience Specialist (RGS) will assist in developing systems that warn communities of geohazards associated with extreme weather. Incumbent will work closely with project scientists and partners to plan and facilitate education and outreach programs or events that increase community understanding of landslides and other geological processes.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports To: Natural Resources Coordinator Supervises: N/A
Liaison To: Communities, project partners, public, and Tribal Citizens
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•Assist with developing of a community-based warning system to convey risks from geohazardsassociated with extreme weather events in Southeast Alaska
•Serve as point-of-contact for community members and stakeholders
•Coordinate logistics, and maintenance of instruments in the field
•Collect data and provide summaries of project findings
•Communicate and promote awareness of risk to communities
•Develop online real-time dashboard to conveys current risks
•Willingness to learn, or ability to, troubleshoot electronic instruments and wireless communications
•Provide logistical, technical, and social support for field project leaders
•Maintain safety plans, trainings, and evaluations of partner projects
•Pool and share resources with partner projects
•Schedule community meetings/workshops
•Facilitate and support communities and Tribes in developing citizen science programs and activities
•Other duties as assigned

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Experience in Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures; contemporary, traditional, political, and social
• Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, and presentation skills
• Strong relationship building skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects, including managing budgets and coordinating the work of others across multiple disciplines
• Ability to collaborate and work with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds with varying goals and practices
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Associates degree in related field
• 2 years’ related experience
• Valid driver’s license
Substitution for degree
• High school diploma and
• 4 years’ experience in related field
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental, Natural Resource or related field
• 2 years’ supervisory experience
UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The RGS should be physically fit and able to work long hours on steep slopes carrying loads of up to 50 pounds in adverse weather conditions. Field work is not limited to summer and often requires hiking in inclement weather and deep snow. These conditions require a respect for safety relative to terrain, weather, and bears.
Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
