Distinguishing Features of the Class: - Under the general supervision of the Chief Respiratory Therapist, incumbents of this class are responsible for the operation and supervision of Respiratory Therapy in assigned areas of Westchester Medical Center. - In addition, the incumbent of this position assists in providing instruction in respiratory techniques to hospital staff and students. -Supervision is exercised over a number of respiratory therapists, technicians and students. - Does related work as required.

Supervises, instructs and participates in the use of all respiratory equipment;

Reviews therapy and treatment being given to patients to ensure that the physician's instructions are being carried out;

Ensures the maintenance of a complete recordkeeping system recording the utilization and upkeep of equipment and other data, as required;

Consults with physicians, nurses and other hospital staff on respiratory cases requiring therapy;

Maintains an adequate supply of oxygen and other gases;

Participates in the instruction of students, nurses, and other hospital staff in therapeutic techniques;

Enforces safety rules and procedures;

Participates in the training of new therapists on procedures at Westchester Medical Center;

Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through publications, conferences, training seminars, etc.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes: - Good knowledge of the practices, principles and techniques of respiratory therapy; skill in the operation and maintenance of respiratory therapy equipment; ability to follow medical instructions; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to instruct the techniques used in operating respiratory equipment; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential tasks of the position; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software; sound professional judgment; reliability; initiative; resourcefulness; physical condition commensurate with the requirements of the position.

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience: - Possession of a valid license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as a Respiratory Therapist.

Special Requirements: - Possession of registration as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
