Basic Function/ Purpose: The Northside CYO is a Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center that primarily provides refugee resettlement services and has several programs that focus on support for the community's families and children. The Refugee Youth Leader position works with refugee youth ages 5 to 21. The Youth Leader will help create and implement a range of youth programs, including welcome academies for the newest arriving refugee children waiting to be placed in public school. They will also work with the youth team to create and implement family activities such as movie nights, holiday events and parent teacher meetings. The Youth Leader will also work with refugee teens in evening programming twice a week to introduce refugee teens to activities offered in Syracuse; both recreational and educational.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities: Prepare and implement lessons for the Welcome Academy. Facilitate the involvement and integration of refugee children in Northside CYO youth programs. Assist with program record keeping and supply purchasing. Coordinate family events for new refugee families including both recreational and educational activities. Make home visits and school visits to gain a better understanding of the needs of refugee children and their families. Act as a liaison between refugee families and their children's schools. Create and supervise a recreational teen group. Organize and input record keeping (attendance, program roster and applications, and snack reimbursement). Transport children/teens to and from Northside CYO (in agency vehicles) when necessary to aid their successful involvement in agency youth programs. Transport children on field trips as needed.
Accountability/Supervisor/Reporting Structure: The Supervisor works in the same building, is available on a daily basis, and will provide consistent supervision. This position is self-directed and the supervisor does not micro-manage the position. The Youth Leader is expected to be able to complete tasks efficiently with supervision as needed. The Youth Leader reports directly to Youth Coordinator, who reports to Director.
Starting Pay For This Position Is: $20.00/ Hour
Qualifications:Education and/or Experience Required at Entry:
- Some college.
- Applicants should be culturally sensitive, interested in working with the refugee population, and have a desire to work with underprivileged children and teens.
- This is an ideal placement for a person interested in new cultures and supporting the educational growth of youth.
Licenses/Certificate/Clearances:
- Valid N.Y.S. Drivers License and clean record.
Skills and Abilities:
- Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
- Organizational skills and customer service skills are essential.
- Flexibility and patience are also required.
