The Opportunity
The R&D Manager works out of our St. Paul, MN location in the Vascular division.
Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive, and cost-effective products for treatment of vascular disease.
The R&D Manager uses multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to manage and participate in design and development of innovative medical devices or components/subsystems in support of company's strategic plan. Manages and conducts development work as part of a major project. Oversees and performs analyses to develop design specifications and performance requirements. Provides technical information concerning manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties and process (advantages/limitations) engineering planning. Guides direct reports to select and use techniques to solve problems and make sound design recommendations. Provides leadership and mentoring to other engineers, and technicians. Supervises other engineers and technicians performing the following tasks, and is a hands-on participant as necessary.
What You’ll Work On
- Run empirical and experimental analysis.
- Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design.
- Conceive and build prototypes.
- Work with outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community.
- Project Planning
- Ensure requirements of TDP and/or PDP are followed as necessary.
- Coordinate and manage resources to meet detailed project timelines and milestones.
- Support animal and bench testing and clinical evaluations.
- Ensure that the quality system requirements are being met.
- Support design reviews and physician visits.
- Define product specifications including justification and supportive testing
- Create product drawings and/or models
- Develop test methods
- Hires and retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and provides ongoing performance feedback. Maintains a safe and professional work environment.
- Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
- Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in engineering related engineering field.
- Minimum 10 years experience in R&D engineering and related functions
- Experience designing and testing medical devices required preferably interventional cardiology devices. Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability required. Project leadership and management skills required.
- Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model preferred.
- Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
- Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.
- Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.
- Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
- Ability to travel approximately 15% with possibility for international travel.

The base pay for this position is $125,300.00 – $250,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
