About the Job
POSITION PURPOSE
Under the guidance of the R&D Lab Manager or Support Team Supervisor, undertakes assembly, fabrication and construction tasks involving heat rejection units, which includes layout and fabrication of sheet metal parts, piping, welding and/or carpentry. Modifies heat rejection equipment per engineering request to support thermal performance testing and technical evaluation of evaporative cooling / thermal storage products and other refrigeration equipment. Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of the R&D facilities and equipment. The Lab Mechanic has a basic understanding of hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment necessary to perform work.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- HS Diploma or GED required.
- Any certifications or training in the vocational type work is preferred.
- Ability to layout and assemble or fabricate metal parts and piping
- Ability to read drawings and schematics
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, powered lift trucks and platform scissor-lifts
- Good written and oral communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment
- Ability to perform both electrical and mechanical troubleshooting of complex systems
- Good computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently yet learns well from others while rarely repeating mistakes.
- Ability to quickly assess a work request and executes the work quickly, safely, and efficiently
- Develop and maintain a focused mindset of continuous improvement in daily tasking and processes assigned.
NATURE & SCOPE
- Participates in BAC’s technology and product development process through observation, study, assembly and operation of heat transfer and thermal storage products.
- Reports to the R&D Lab Manager and Team Supervisor; Interfaces with multiple functional disciplines including engineering, quality, manufacturing, supply chain management, and marketing
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Perform daily 5S techniques to maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Performs activities to support testing of Global Engineering projects and initiatives
- Fabrication and assembly of test fixtures from both written and verbal specifications
- Piping and instrumentation of evaporative heat transfer equipment for thermal, sound and vibration testing
- Prototype assembly and modification involving electrical, mechanical, and heat transfer components using various materials and methods of construction
- Conduct preventive maintenance and upkeep of the R&D laboratory facilities and equipment
WORKING CONDITIONS
This role is for first shift. Up to 10% of the time this person may be asked to work a 2nd or 3rd shift to help accelerate project completion times.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk up to 80% of the time. Frequent use of hands to perform mechanical tasks including turning, torquing, lifting, pushing, pulling is required. Working conditions include inside a lab area and occasionally outside exposed to weather. The ability to work on ladders and lifts is required. This position requires occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. to shoulder height. Weekend and shift work may be necessary depending. #ZR
BAC Hiring Compensation Range $21.75 - $32.63.
