BRIEF POSITION DESCRIPTION:
- The Quality and Process Manager’s objective is to ensure that all cements produced meet plant, customer, industry, and government requirements. Coordinate production and sales to maintain product inventory. Ensure that testing is done accurately and in accordance with established standards, report on quality, and certify final products. Lead the continuous process optimization working with all other departments, leading the process engineers to perform process inspections, measurements, audits and supporting problem solving process. Minimum 5 years’ experience in cement as a production or process engineer or supervisory chemist, or a minimum of five years’ experience as a Quality Control Manager or equivalent position in a heavy industry with continuous processes such as steel, lime, glass, etc.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all the activities under his/her responsibility are performed safely.
- Support the safety programs defined by the company.
- Responsible and accountable for meeting internal and customer specifications, as well as documenting and certifying that cement shipped meets applicable ASTM and/or AASHTO requirements.
- As designated management representative, holds responsibility and authority for operating, maintaining, and implementing the requirements of the Corporate and Plant Quality Manuals.
- Produce required testing results from all stages of production to ensure proper plant operation, including raw materials, raw mix, clinker, fuel, and cement.
- Responsible for staffing laboratory personnel and training laboratory and any other personnel that will be involved in sampling and testing.
- Ensure the accuracy of process control test equipment as well as lab equipment.
- Produce and supply cements with the best quality at lowest cost and meet the cost objectives of the Quality department.
- Work to ensure that all Quality Department areas are operated safely and in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Coordinate with other plant departments for continuous improvement in procedures, materials, testing schedules, and equipment.
- Coordinate with the sales representatives for continuous improvements in products, or work in developing new product lines.
- Review plant operating performances to assist with daily actions and lead to longer-term strategic actions
- Review plant performance in relation to technical plans, quality standards, production targets and environmental requirements to make recommendations regarding optimization
- Complete field process measurements and shop audits, as required to troubleshoot and by the plant’s schedule for these events
- Complete periodic technical reporting, as required by the organization
- Develop product and manufacturing improvement proposals, including technical solutions and cost justifications for potential investment projects
- Assist in relevant project startups to ensure efficient performance
- Assist in major shop post-outage pre-start inspection and startup to ensure efficient performance
- Managing the Process Department, including the employees (process engineering resources) and budget resources
Specific Accountabilities
- Accountable for promoting “safety first” attitude among employees.
- Formulate plant specific quality policies and strategies.
- Plan and execute daily QA/QC activities.
- Provide support to the Technical Director and Technical Sales.
- Respond to findings of internal quality audits.
- Identify and record quality problems; initiate, recommend or provide solutions through designated channels; and verify the implementation of solutions.
- Initiate action to prevent the occurrence of any nonconformance in relation to the product and Quality Management System.
- Control further processing/delivery of nonconforming products until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
- Properly resolve customer complaints.
- Work with Purchasing to establish spare parts inventory for laboratory and recommend stocking levels.
- Maintain and lead plant technical improvement/optimization plans
- Accountable for process optimization pertaining to company guidelines and policies.
- Accountable for tracking plant performance and providing actions to improve plant equipment efficiency.
- Promote teamwork and a positive outlook within the organization by developing cohesiveness between departments.
- Supervise the efforts and development of the Process Engineers
Education:
- Requires a 4-year degree in technical discipline such as Chemistry or Engineering and / or related fields.

Experience and Skills Requirements:
- Prior experience in a cement-manufacturing environment with increasing responsibilities for quality assurance product compliance and process optimization.
- Knowledge of cross-belt analyzers and laboratory automation is beneficial.
- Previous supervisory skills
- Statistical analysis skills
- Requires good computer skills, must be able to effectively communicate, coordinate, interface, and correspond with customers and plant staff
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in cement as a production or process engineer or supervisory chemist, or a minimum of five years’ experience as a Quality Control Manager or equivalent position in a heavy industry with continuous processes such as steel, lime, glass, etc.
- Good communications skills – written and verbal
ADA Limitations:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to travel through a cement plant, i.e., walk over obstacles, climb stairs and ladders, lift heavy or awkward parts, wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.)
The employee will at times be exposed to extremely hot / cold, dusty, noisy, or dark situations. At times, work will be performed at great heights or in small, confined spaces.
