Purina Feed Mill Internship - Herreid, South Dakota
Position Summary:
Taking place at a local agriculture cooperative, this internship is an opportunity to learn and engage with various functional areas in a feed mill including management,quality control, bulk receiving, batch/mix, pellet, bagging, warehouse and bulk load out.The internwill have the opportunity to learn a working knowledge and understanding of government regulation requirements regarding feed manufacturing and transportation.Under dedicated supervision, intern will serve in various capacities within each functional area of the feed operation to provide a broad scope of training to help facilitate a career in the feed manufacturing industry.
Position Duties:
- Understanding of basic animal nutrition, feed rationing, quality control, plant/mill safety and management.
- Review managementresponsibilities to include environmental health and safetysystems, safety rules, lockout tagout, personal protective equipment, confined space, ingredient scheduling, jobbing and bag ordering and housekeeping program.
- Assist with Quality Control manuals, learn and perform tasks related to HACCP requirements, Quality Assurance filing,compliance, labeling, work orders, complaint handling, audits, ingredient requisitions, drug inventory system, moisture testing, calibration of scales and meters.
- Perform duties to include production scheduling, batch logs, product tracking, process flow (mixer, liquids, routing, etc.), drug handling, inventory cycle count, Micro Weighing - bar code system, etc.
- Help manage warehouse and overview of feed & ingredient storage, learn stock rotation, loading and filing orders, forklift safety, inventory cycle count, receiving product, etc.
- Learn bulk loadout tasks related to dispatch and scheduling, blending, QualityControlsampling, truck verification/bin checks, documentation, scale operation and process flow.
Position Competencies and Qualifications:
- Pursuing a bachelor's degree in an animal sciences , feed sciences, manufacturing, management or agriculture related majorwith sophomore, junior , or senior status.
- Understanding of swine and poultry species, animal husbandry, management practices, nutritional guidelines and industry knowledge.
- Previous experience working in a feed mill or a similar manufacturing setting is preferred.
- Frequently move, lift and carry boxes, tubs, and tools weighing 50-60 lbs., access and utilize farm equipment, and move or traverse on uneven ground.
