Performs skilled technical work involving the construction, installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of computerized traffic signals, traffic control mechanisms, roadway lighting systems, and all electronic components to operate traffic control devices. Performs utility locates. May act as a lead worker.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Installs, maintains, and calibrates sophisticated electronic traffic signal controllers, on street masters, conflict monitors, fiber optic cable and communications equipment, video cameras, inductive, video and microwave vehicle detector units, and pedestrian facilities.
- Performs routine preventative and emergency maintenance on all traffic control devices to ensure continuous and safe operations: changes displays; checks wiring connections; paints signal housings; levels signal mounting hardware; repairs/replaces damaged mounting hardware; cleans signal control cabinet; locates and/or raises pull boxes; verifies detection; replaces signs, etc.
- Investigates complaints of damaged or malfunctions traffic control and school warning devices: conducts site visits; diagnoses problems; and makes needed repairs to restore safe operations.
- Performs routine installation, repair and maintenance on roadway lighting systems: changes lamps, fuses, and ballasts; locates and corrects underground faults; installs light poles; and troubleshooting high voltage electrical service distribution points.
- Services and operates a variety of electronic traffic signal control repair tools and testing equipment: troubleshoots electronic components using diagnostic test equipment, volt/ohm meters, oscilloscope, logic probe, power meter, test cabinet, and personal computers with sophisticated diagnostic programs.
- Monitors contracted workers installing and repairing traffic signals, street lighting, school flashers, or fiber optic facilities: monitors work in progress; inspects completed work; monitors, tracks and approves materials used and change orders; and prepares and submits related reports and documentation.
- Develops training aids and test equipment to assist with training new employees and troubleshooting problems.
- Locates underground utility lines: receives and responds to work tickets and locate requests; travels to site; reads maps; locates depth and length of lines; marks locations of utility lines; updates maps and computer databases; and maintains related documentation.
- Operates vehicles and equipment such as bucket truck, crane truck, and forklift on a routine basis in the performance of assigned duties.
- Performs general maintenance on equipment.
- Prepares routine reports and paperwork including trouble reports, and purchase requisitions.
- Participates in rotational on-call program as required.
- May act as lead worker, when appropriate, with a team of subordinates and/or peers.
- Provide exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
