DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The Public Safety Service Officer is responsible for a variety of functions including receiving, transmitting and logging messages over a radio communications system in a municipal public safety operation, assisting police officers and fire personnel when necessary, and performing other tasks related to department operations. The employee works under general supervision of the on-duty shift commander assigned to the Patrol Division. However, independent judgment is required relative to the actions necessary to dispatch various personnel in response to calls for service, and emergencies related to department operations. In addition to answering 911 and non-emergency calls, the employee shall assist police officers with restraining and physical management of individuals in custody and processing arrestees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Note: These examples are intended merely as illustrations of the various types of work performed.)
- Receives and transmits radio messages to public safety personnel
- Maintains a log of each message received or transmitted
- Operates LEIN machine and computer terminal
- Keeps records and prepares reports
- Performs jail attendant duties, including searching prisoners, taking finger prints and mug shots, processing court paper work and other related duties as directed
- Performs physical management and assists with restraining subjects in custody when necessary
- Assists in front desk, animal control, and traffic control duties as needed
- Answers all department phone calls, including emergency 911 calls for police and fire.
- Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Must possess personal physical stamina and endurance to respond to physical management situations and assist with restraining individuals in custody
- Ability to type 40 words per minute
- Ability to remain calm and to act quickly and effectively in emergencies
- Ability to properly and efficiently operate the required office equipment including the LEIN Terminal
- Ability to maintain accurate and legible records and prepare required reports
- Ability to hear well, comprehend quickly, and speak clearly and concisely in a well-modulated and audible voice during high stress situations when there may be multiple conversations occurring at the same time
- Ability to quickly learn and perform the job duties, and pertinent rules, regulations, policies and procedures
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to multitask such as operating multiple computer systems while having a conversation or while taking notes listening to the radio
- Be willing to work a variety of shifts and on a seven day per week schedule
- Ability to learn the operation of a radio communications system
- Ability to learn pertinent state and local laws
- Ability to learn streets and principal locations in and around Canton Township
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to quickly learn and perform the job duties, and pertinent rules, regulations, policies and procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees
- Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner

Based on the qualifications of the candidates in the applicant pool, selection and hiring preference may be given to candidates that have:
- Verifiable work experience in a municipal government Police and/or Fire Dispatch environment responding to both 911 emergency and non-emergency calls.
- 911 Dispatch Academy Certification with related work experience.
- Work experience in jail attendant duties, prisoner searches and processing arrests.
- Related Military Experience.
- Demonstrated interest in a law enforcement and/or criminal justice career as supported by prior work experience, education and/or training in Criminal Justice related courses, programs, or employment.
The preferred candidates must also meet the following criteria to be considered further for the Public Safety Service Officer Position:
- Questionnaire and application prepared representing the quality of desired professional work (Spelling, grammar, and presentation are essential).
- Must be willing and able to work rotating 12-hour shifts over the next year.
- Must have a background that is free of liability concerns, such as, convictions of careless or reckless driving, suspended license, felony or criminal convictions or any convictions involving drinking or impaired driving within the past 5 years.
Call Taker Video Test - Tuesday, February 4, 2025
- Qualified candidates will be scheduled to take the Call Taker Video Test on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
- The video simulation will measure situational assessment, listening and communication, decision making, and other skills required in the Public Safety Service Officer position. The call taker simulated video test will take approximately 3 hours to complete.
- Candidates must pass the test with a minimum score of 70%.
Oral Interviews on or after Tuesday, February 18, 2025
- Candidates that pass the call taker video test will be scheduled for an oral interview on or after Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The oral interview will include extensive questions that may explore sensitive or confidential aspects of candidates' personal lives.
Eligibility List Established
- Upon conclusion of Oral Interviews, an Eligibility Hiring List will be prepared and will be contingent on the candidate completing dispatch observation. The eligibility list will establish an expiration date one year from the preparation date.
Dispatch Observation (Job Shadow)
- Candidates selected for the eligibility list will be required to observe dispatch operations. Observation will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable time within seven calendar days after accepted contingent offer.
