Public Relations Officer

As the Public Relations Officer, you will work closely with the office to elevate its presence, manage public communications, and coordinate outreach efforts. This is a dynamic role where you’ll be responsible for producing content, organizing community events, assisting with media relations, and maintaining the office’s website. The ideal candidate will be an independent worker with excellent writing skills, experience with various social media and website programs, and a strong background in PR and media relations.
This is an on-site, in-person in Buffalo, New York.
Responsibilities:
- Write and coordinate press releases, public service announcements, and other communication materials for the department.
- Manage and update the department’s website and digital presence.
- Assist with speechwriting and preparing the Official for public speaking engagements and interviews.
- Serve as the primary media contact, responding to inquiries and arranging media coverage for events.
- Organize and participate in community outreach events and meetings.
- Develop and implement a social media strategy to enhance the Official’s visibility.
- Work closely with the Executive Assistant to arrange media coverage, prepare for interviews, and ensure smooth execution of public relations initiatives.
- Take high-quality photos for media use and public communications.
- Maintain a consistent and professional image for the Official in all public-facing materials.
- Attend Staff and/or Community Meetings as requested.
- Perform related duties as needed.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience with public relations, media outreach, and speechwriting.
- Experience with website management, and various social media platforms.
- Strong ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to create, edit, and distribute engaging content across various platforms.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Additional Requirements:
- Must live in the City of Buffalo, or move to the City of Buffalo within 6 months of hire.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field is preferred.
- A portfolio or samples of relevant work may be requested.
