About Us: Join the Public Relations team at the Kenton County Public Library. As a public library, we are dedicated to fostering a love of reading, lifelong learning and community engagement. Our department is responsible for enhancing the library's visibility through media relations, social media, event promotion and more. This is a unique opportunity for an intern interested in gaining hands-on experience in public relations, marketing, and events within a library setting.
Position Summary: The Public Relations Intern will support the Public Relations & Social Media team with various tasks that promote the library's programs, events, and resources. This position will also help support the library's non-profit, 501c3 organization the Kenton County Public Library Foundation. This is the ideal role for an organized, creative and motivated individual passionate about public relations, media, and social media. The intern will work closely with team members to assist in drafting news releases, developing social media content and managing special projects that connect with our community.
This is a semester-long internship that will conclude at the end of the 2025 spring semester. Schedule will consist of 10-15 hours per week.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Event Support: Help plan and execute library events such as launching the Summer Reading Celebration and opening a new library branch.
- Media Relations: Support efforts to build relationships with local media, including organizing media lists, creating media kits and tracking news coverage
- Materials: Help draft news releases, blogs, photo opportunities, and other written communications to promote library events, programs and initiatives.
- Administrative Tasks: Perform other duties, such as organizing press kits and ambassador materials, supporting PR calendar management, and maintaining organization in the Public Relations storage room. Deliver items to local businesses as needed. Perform additional duties as needed to ensure efficient team operations.
- Content Creation: Assist in creating engaging content for social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This includes taking and editing photos and videos to help tell the library's story.
- Research and Analysis: Conduct research as needed relevant to public relations.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of AP Style
- Proficiency in social media platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Basic knowledge of graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Photoshop or similar) is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
- Enthusiasm for community engagement and a passion for public libraries.
- Reliable transportation.
