About the Job
I. SCOPE OF ROLE:
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of treatment services
professionals in an OMH funded clinic. Reporting to the Assistant Medical Director & Clinic Director
Psych NP will assess patients' mental and physical status based on the presenting symptoms and
complaints and diagnose psychiatric disorders and mental health conditions.
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Meet with Associate Medical Director, Clinic Director, Program Nurse, and Social Service staff
coordinate ongoing psychiatric treatment.
• Write prescriptions for psychotropic medications as allowed by state regulations and collaborative
practice agreements. Review health assessments completed by the Program Nurse and provide
clinical feedback.
• Provide medication management including prescription refills and medication education
consumers.
• Document patients' medical and psychological histories, physical assessment results, diagnoses
treatment plans, prescriptions, or outcomes.
• Prepare Psychiatric Assessments for the purpose of HRA 2010e Housing Application and/or other
applications for housing or needed services.
• Provide training to other team members on topics including medications and drug interactions.
• Communicates and coordinates care with psychiatrists in the community, as needed.
• Refer residents to emergency care if needed, work with emergency responders/emergency room
staff to coordinate emergency treatment, coordinate treatment and discharge planning with hospital
staff.
• Provide in service staff training monthly and consultation as needed to the social service team.
• Provide crisis intervention and address all emergency situations as appropriate.
• Assist in building evacuation during fire drills and building emergencies.
• Maintain CPR/First Aid Certification.
• Maintain up to date, accurate, complete, and timely consumer chart documentation.
• Attend staff meetings, case conferences, group supervision, and trainings as needed.
• Attend face to face supervision with Collaborating Psychiatrist at least monthly. Make chart work
available to Collaborating Psychiatrist for quarterly reviews.
• Comply with all SUS Employee Policies, Procedures, and Protocols, SUS Corporate Compliance
Policies, and NYS Dept. of Social Services Rules, Regulations, and Statutes.
• A work schedule that includes some weekend and evening hours will be required.
• Other duties as assigned.
2-Day NP Role
Qualifications:III. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse in New York State and credentialed by the State to practice as an
advanced Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in psychiatry.
• Must be registered as a NY State Medicaid provider. Must have a DEA# and an individual NPI #. Must
carry individual malpractice insurance.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, to assist adult males of diverse ethnicities,
backgrounds, ages, and sexual preferences.
• Must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
• Bilingual English/Spanish speaking preferred
• Experience with underserved individuals and direct service to people living with serious mental
illness and/or substance use disorders
• Preference is given to those who have experience working on a multi- disciplinary team and/or
previous experience with homeless population.
