Summary
The Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), providing visionary leadership and strategic direction for all academic programs and initiatives. As the senior member of the Chancellor's executive team, the Provost is responsible for ensuring the academic excellence of the university and fostering a culture of innovation that encourages growth and change. This role requires a dynamic leader who can advance the university's mission by guiding academic policy, enhancing faculty development, and overseeing curriculum and research initiatives. The Provost is also expected to collaborate effectively with other university leaders, engage with external partners, and represent the university at the highest levels to support its growth as a premier comprehensive regional research university.
UCCS, a high research activity institution and one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system, has a broad range of degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs in business, education, engineering, nursing and health sciences, and public service. UCCS seeks to provide unsurpassed, student-centered teaching and learning and outstanding research and creative work that serve our community, region, state, and nation as a premier comprehensive, regional research university. The campus, founded in 1965, enrolls approximately 10,500 students annually and offers 56 baccalaureate degree programs, 31 master's programs, and ten doctoral programs.
Essential Functions
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
+ As chief academic officer, articulate and promote teaching, learning, research, and creative works as the core of the university and campus development. Provide vision and leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating academic programs, including academic healthcare clinics and faculty clinical/professional practice.
+ Serve as the Chancellor's collaborative partner and advisor in leading the university and in the Chancellor's place when they are unavailable.
+ Allocate resources to support the high quality of UCCS' academic programs, teaching, research, creative works, and service. Foster excellence, grounded in ethical and sustainable practices in teaching, research/creative work, and service commitments of academic colleges, departments, library, and graduate school.
+ Lead initiatives and set examples that actively promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across all academic and administrative units. Ensure the campus environment supports and values individuals from diverse backgrounds, enhancing the university's commitment to civil dialogue and learning across differences in an inclusive community.
+ Actively seeks to remove barriers to innovation and sustainable growth in academic affairs and complementary initiatives across campus.
+ Promote student success and the learning environment by emphasizing collaboration between faculty and staff in curricular and co-curricular programs and student support services, ranging from wellness to academic support. Oversee and coordinate the integration of academic affairs with student affairs to ensure a holistic and seamless student experience.
+ Provide strategic leadership in cultivating and securing funding for research and creative works across various disciplines. Develop and promote a vision for expanding these activities to support the evolving academic landscape of the campus, advancing campus research and community engagement. Additionally, ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the research enterprise's administrative and operational support systems. This includes optimizing processes for managing sponsored projects, streamlining back-office functions, and addressing any systemic challenges that may hinder the growth and success of research initiatives.
+ Provide forward-thinking, innovative leadership to guide UCCS in the quickly changing environment of higher education, building on connections with our external community and internal stakeholders to help the institution evolve.
+ Collaborate effectively with provosts from the Boulder, Denver, and Anschutz campuses, CU System administrators, the Board of Regents, other Colorado colleges and universities, and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education.
+ Lead efforts to address the university's mission and challenges by effectively navigating and influencing budgetary, policy, and programmatic decisions and ensuring that shared governance principles are respected.
+ Recruit, develop, and promote top-quality, diverse tenure-track and Instructional, Research, and Clinical faculty, deans, and other academic leaders. Provide oversight of reappointment, promotions, tenure processes, annual evaluations, salary setting, and campus accreditation.
+ Work collaboratively and effectively with the Chancellor, other vice chancellors, deans, vice provosts, and faculty to formulate and implement long-range academic, student development, and financial plans, including fundraising priorities and strategies. Lead the development and administration of academic policies within a culture of true shared governance.
+ Oversee and strategically align a diverse range of academic units and offices, including but not limited to the Deans of the Colleges, the Office of the Provost, Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning, Research, Faculty Affairs, and Extended Studies & Academic Outreach, ensuring alignment and support across these critical academic and administrative units.
+ Consistently and transparently collaborate with the Faculty Assembly and the Faculty Assembly Executive Committee to ensure faculty are actively involved in key academic and strategic decisions, reinforcing the university's commitment to shared governance.
+ Lead the strategic realignment of faculty affairs resources to effectively support and empower faculty across all ranks.

Qualifications
+ Educational Background: Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution. A distinguished record of teaching, research/creative works, and service sufficient to warrant appointment and tenure at the rank of full professor within a college and department at UCCS.
+ Leadership Experience: A proven track record of at least three years of university administrative leadership at the dean level or higher or as the head of a central academic unit. A strong record in developing and supporting undergraduate education, research, creative works, and graduate education.
+ Commitment to Diversity: Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with a proven ability to lead by example and foster behaviors that support these values.
+ Strategic Vision and Governance: Demonstrated experience integrating financial and strategic planning, with a strong understanding and vision for interdisciplinary scholarship and learning. A deep understanding of the mission, challenges, and shared governance of public higher education, with experience in navigating budgetary and policy decisions at a strategic level.
+ Communication and Integrity: Evidence of strong organizational, analytical, leadership, and motivational skills, including the ability to elicit trust and confidence. An ethical leader committed to making principle-based decisions with integrity and transparency, with excellent communication (writing, public speaking, and listening) skills. An emotionally intelligent leader who can, with empathy, approachability, and inclusiveness, foster an environment where everyone feels valued and respected and ensure that all voices are heard.
