Tacoma Power's Transmission and Distribution Section is seeking an Associate Power Systems Engineer or Associate Power Systems Engineer, Senior within its Power System Protection group in support of Tacoma Power's mission to provide safe and reliable electric service.
This position requires excellent communication skills to interact regularly with a diverse audience in other groups: engineering (substation, control systems, generation, technicians, communications, line), project management, system planning, construction and maintenance crews, and system operations.
Responsibilities of this position include:
+ Design and commission system protection projects with supervision from a licensed Professional Engineer. Work is performed on 6.6kV, 12.47kV, 13.8kV, 15 kV, 115 kV, and 230 kV systems.
+ Perform protection coordination studies and issue relay settings to effectively interface with internal and external customer installations
+ Support selection of microprocessor, solid state, and/or electromechanical protective relays.
+ Provide responsive technical support to T&D crews during capital project installations
+ Lead collaborative troubleshooting of substation protection systems or components, working with craft personnel to identify and diagnose root causes, evaluate approaches and/or solutions, and see tasks through to resolution
+ Perform post-event analysis and review of protection system operations. Provide recommendations for system enhancements.
+ Maintain electrical system models and perform short circuit studies in support of transmission, distribution, and generation projects
+ Perform arc flash hazard analyses for Tacoma Power systems
+ Create or modify system protection standards and work practices
+ Participate as a subject matter expert on relevant federal electrical grid reliability standards
+ Prepare accurate technical reports
+ Understand and apply electrical technical and safety codes and regulations.
+ Provide project budgeting input and recommendations
+ Respond to operational inquiries and issues, both during planned work and during emergencies

Qualifications
Associate Power Systems Engineer Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, etc)
+ 0-1 year of engineering experience in a power utility
Senior Power Systems Engineer Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Etc)
+ 2 years of engineering experience in a power utility
*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
Must complete Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) within 6 months of hire and maintain thereafter.
Washington State Driver's License
Knowledge & Skills
+ Demonstrated knowledge and fundamental understanding of protection systems including generators, substations, and transmission lines
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills
+ Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
+ Strong analytical and decision making skills

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.
