Protection & Control Field Services Relay Support Engineer
JOB SUMMARY:
This job is in the Transmission Support Team (Relay Support). This position will be filled as a Non-Exempt position in the Protection & Control Field Services Engineer/Technician family, with the pay and level commensurate with the qualifications, education, and experience of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be responsible for Protection & Control (P&C) field services (Test Engineering) support activities within the Georgia Power service territory. Safety and Quality are paramount in this position. In this position the successful candidate would be expected to support the TMCs with any protective relay issues. This could include, but not limited to, any mis-operations, function testing, test set issues, building and implementing test templates for RTS and Power DB tests, special projects such as traveling wave and 61850 testing and implementation, and assisting with projects to help the TMCs complete their workplan when needed.
Education Requirements:
+ - 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or
+ - 4-year BS Degree in Engineering Technology, or
+ - Professional Engineer License, or
+ - 2-year technical degree in electrical maintenance, or
+ - 7 years of equivalent applicable experience in P&C Field Services
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
+ - Knowledge of 3-phase power systems.
+ - Knowledge of AC/DC protection and control schemes.
+ - Good computer and communication skills.
+ - Strong math skills.
+ - Ability to solve problems and to make sound decisions.
Experience Desired
+ - 4 years of P&C Field Services (Test Engineering) experience required.
+ - Electric power utility transmission operations, maintenance, or construction experience.
+ - Related substation experience (P&C Applications, Design, Construction, Major Equipment, Project Management, etc.)
+ - Hands-on experience in testing, commissioning, and maintaining relaying and control equipment
+ - Experience using test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communications instruments, and
+ computerized relay test sets
+ - Significant Electromechanical Protection Relay testing and calibration experience
+ - Significant Transmission Protection Relaying background
+ - Pilot relaying commissioning/trouble shooting skills
+ - Understanding of Fault Data equipment
Job Responsibilities
+ - For the relay support role, the majority of time will be spent on providing relay support to TMC’s and originating and executing projects to replace aging relays.
+ - Secondary functions include supporting the protection communications and disturbance monitoring equipment teams.
+ - Investigate and resolve Protective relaying miss-operations.
+ - Develop procedures, modifications, and guidelines on protective relaying equipment.
+ - Write test procedures and automated relay test plans for protective relays.
+ - Provide emergency support to P&C Field Services personnel for spare equipment and parts.
+ - Effectively interface with other departments, Operating Companies, manufacturers & vendors.
+ - Evaluate new test equipment.
+ - Develop and present formal and informal (OJT - on-the-job-training) training to the P&C Field Services personnel on protective relaying equipment.
+ - Serve on system committees.
+ - Successful candidate shall be available to respond to outages or other abnormal power system conditions outside of their normal work schedule.
