Our client is searching for a Project Superintendent to join their growing team on industrial projects. The client is a leader in providing global on-site solutions that partners with the world’s leading energy, power, and industrial companies to solve critical surface engineering challenges, enhance coating and welding techniques, and evaluate material performance. The client helps customers solve metal wastage and reliability problems in mission-critical equipment and are an industry leader in the development and application of solutions to corrosion and erosion problems in challenging operating environments. This position requires extensive travel required (a total of 4 to 7 months annually), with projects typically lasting 1-3 weeks. This position will work from their home office when not traveling to manager projects. This is a great company with lots of growth!
General Purpose of the Position: Ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and quality programs and policies. Responsible for managing field services personnel and maintaining communication with clients while building and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Implement resource planning, mobilization, project safety, personnel, equipment, material control, project documentation, and reporting. Support customer relations, communication, scope and quality management, demobilization, and post-project review for metal spray, weld overlay, mechanical, or LPA filtration projects from a site location within the quoted time and budget. Understand company product and service offerings and how they relate to solving metal wastage problems for customer equipment and processes; support the growth of strong customer relationships.
Provide feedback to the management team for corporate strategic initiatives related to customer service, safety, quality, project incentives, and technical training needs. Support strategic growth objectives through the execution of quality projects that directly impact scalability and efficacy. Act as a company liaison with the project client on all matters related to safety, timeline, identification of additional work, and upsell opportunities.
Critical Success Factors:
- Monitor team performance to ensure end-of-project evaluations are completed accurately and fairly by the team leaders.
- Expectation is that the site superintendent spends approximately 2 hours per day in the work area observing performance and conducting spot QC checks firsthand.
- Ensure that site operations are conducted safely and in accordance with both company and customer-specific safety standards and procedures.
- Use interface occasions to provide the customer with information regarding the company’s value, differentiation, and potential upsell opportunities. Network with customers to identify future opportunities on the current project as well as other projects within and outside their fleet.
- Ensure profitable project execution through effective planning, efficient use of consumable resources, and minimizing waste.
- Understand how losses in efficiency, consumable usage, and waste affect the gross margin of the project and adversely impact project bonus payments.
- Manage workflow through team leaders to gain both effectiveness and efficiency.
- Ensure team leaders perform their duties effectively and in accordance with their job descriptions.
- Coach and mentor team leaders as necessary.
- Perform all reporting and administrative tasks promptly and accurately.
- Maintain professional conduct at all times through personal adherence and coaching of team leaders in line with company values.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Project Planning (in Collaboration with the Project Manager):
- Generate a project plan summarizing the schedule of events.
- Plan site layout per customer, work, and safety requirements.
- Communicate resource requirements.
- Oversee travel, lodging, and other personnel logistics or aid team leaders and/or project managers as needed.
- Verify resource availability and identify/address deficiencies to ensure appropriate levels of personnel are assigned to the project.
- Communicate resource requirements to the resource scheduler.
- Request project equipment, materials, and consumables from internal resource providers.
- Communicate team schedule and confirm departures and arrivals as needed with assigned team leaders.
- Prepare, maintain, and control project management files and reports for pre- and post-job work.
- Obtain required customer approvals and signatures.
On-Site Project Engineering:
- Responsible for on-site quality management.
- Manage project scope and manage scope changes regarding client communication, commercial variation orders, area calculations, and technical and/or quality impacts.
- Assist the project manager with schedule management, progress tracking, and projections.
- Review onsite engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions in collaboration with the project manager.
Project Execution:
- Manage work to scope of contract.
- Manage critical path schedule.
- Manage equipment specifications, material, and consumables on-site.
- Responsible for commercial billing support, including time and material approvals.
- Management of 5 to 60-man crew.
- Approve man-hours on weekly timesheets for payroll and assist team leaders with timesheet completion.
- Understand company and customer health & safety policies, guidelines, and procedures, ensuring compliance.
- Monitor and control project costs in accordance with the scope of work.
- Responsible for on-site client communication.
- Coordinate final inspection by customers and external inspectors.
Equipment and Processes Support:
- Understand company product and service offerings and how they relate to solving metal wastage problems for customer equipment and processes.
- Perform quality inspections, as needed, of surface applications.
- Analyze quality data and communicate recommended solutions to the client based on the results.
- Understand equipment operation and requirements for repair and maintenance and provide guidance and/or assistance to teams as needed.
- Plan, execute, and support technical internal/external projects.
- Participate in new product development and commissioning.
Business Development Support:
- Attend client equipment inspections.
- Scope and sell additional project opportunities while on-site.
- Accompany sales personnel for site visits.
- Conduct operational evaluation of opportunities.
Skills and Abilities Required:

Effort/Working Conditions:
- Job is performed in a challenging environment in various client facilities, including but not limited to refineries, paper mills, and power plants in both the USA and international locations.
- Difficult working conditions characterized by long hours with 12-hour shifts.
- Work on project sites is often performed in full personal protective equipment.
- Must be physically able to move in and out of confined spaces and work at heights.
- Requires 4 to 7 months of extensive travel, including international travel; most projects are 2-6 weeks in duration.
Education and Experience Required:
- Experience with specialized technology-based field services operations servicing petrochemical and power industries is preferred.
- 2+ years of progressive responsibility in site and on-site management required.
- 2+ years of hands-on management of craftsmen (proven track record in effectively managing small and medium-sized projects required).
- 2 years of turnaround experience (experience with the operations and environments of chemical and petroleum industry facilities) preferred.
- NACE CIP Level 1 and 2 preferred.
