Purpose and Scope of Position
The Principal Plant Engineer manages multi-discipline projects, creates/revises engineering documentation, and oversees external engineers/architects. Responsibilities include handling small-scale modifications to large, complex installations and site improvements, as well as conducting investigations and developing reports. This role involves leading cross-functional internal project teams from initiation to closeout and acting as the primary contact for project execution.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Managed the manufacturing of utility systems (WFI, Pure Air, Pure Steam, Natural Gas, Nitrogen, HVAC).
- Oversee engineering projects for system improvements and apply innovative solutions.
- Coordinate with operations to minimize disruptions during projects/maintenance.
- Provide technical support to maintenance staff, service providers, and operational users.
- Collaborate with Facilities, Maintenance, and Global Engineering on engineering solutions.
- Review and approve technical documentation to ensure up-to-date compliance.
- Ensure GMP critical utilities comply with regulations and best practices.
- Investigate issues and implement corrective actions.
- Contribute to quality plans for service interruptions and safe returns to service.
- Work with QA and EHS to resolve compliance challenges.
- Stay updated on industry practices for critical utilities.
- Respond to unplanned outages to maintain manufacturing continuity.
- Issue safety permits and conduct job hazard analyses for project safety.
- Act as site subject matter expert for critical utility systems and ensure inspection readiness.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and cost savings.
- Apply reliability concepts to enhance maintenance and prevent failures.
- Maintain and revise SOPs, and train in-house staff and contractors as needed.
- Perform additional assigned duties.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field preferred; advanced degree is a plus.
- 7 years of relevant work experience, ideally in pharmaceutical or engineering environments.
- Project management and aseptic manufacturing experience preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Possible climbing of ladders or roofs and exposure to elevated noise levels requiring hearing protection.
- May require walking outside briefly and wearing safety glasses and hairnets.
- Exposure to noise, gases, odors, and slippery conditions is possible.
- Travel may be necessary (<10%, domestic and international).
- Ability to work 8+ hours per day during shutdowns; focus during lengthy technical discussions is required.
