About the Job
We are seeking a full-time Project Manager 1 Engineering in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for providing project management and coordination for small to mid-sized projects between project team and other departments in the development of Garmin products.
Responsibilities:Essential Functions
- Learns and applies project management skills within small to mid-size projects or sub-projects, seeking input from mentor and/or supervisor as needed
- Supports provision and timely documentation of clear project scope (ex. detailed assumptions, requirements (internal, external, regulatory), objectives/targets, validation needs, resource estimates, costs, and timing)
- Uses communication skills to ensure team members/stakeholders are appropriately informed including awareness of project scope, milestones, main points of contact, repositories, and tools specific to the assigned tasks/project(s)
- Supports creation and maintenance of basic timelines and milestone tracking and open action/issues lists
- Drives assigned project elements to closure and uses good judgment in determining when to escalate issues above mentor or direct supervisor
- May lead small or mid-sized projects or sub-projects including estimating level of effort for project management tasks
- Learns reporting formats and understands level of detail necessary to ensure accurate project reporting
- Distributes project documentation (e.g. reports, meeting minutes, emails, etc.) in a timely manner to appropriate distribution lists
- Learns interdependencies of and ability to develop good relationships between the development team(s), other Garmin teams/departments and external entities (ex. customers, suppliers, etc.)
- Learns product domain (ex. knowledge of storage memory required for product features, etc.)
- Actively participates in effective/efficient team meetings and may lead depending on assigned tasks/project(s)
- Effectively creates, processes and releases GPNs, BOMs and ECOs within established processes
- Learns and understands established processes and demonstrates ability to complete well defined tasks and/or projects
- Applies design standards and procedures using appropriate engineering and project management tools to document and implement basic designs in an organized manner
- Learns customer communication skills, including but not limited to handling difficult conversations and negotiating with the customer for reasonable delivery targets
- Learns PPAP and APQP documentation requirements to meet customer expectations with limited support or mentoring
- Supports project or feature development to provide a quality product for the AOEM customer
- Supports working hours as needed to best align with project development needs – resources will be treated as on-call for customer depending on customers working hours
- Develops and maintains a detailed project budget, product costs, staffing plan, and change request register
- Opportunities for specialization exist in this role (ex. Automotive and Automotive OEM, Aviation, Marine, Outdoor, Fitness)
- Possible business travel required
For Automotive OEM Project Management positions:
- Learns the compliance standards (i.e. IATF 16949, ASPICE, VDA, etc.) that are applicable to AOEM development, including understanding which standards are applicable to which global developments
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a technical discipline OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to learn how to use and apply engineering and project management tools
- Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead projects in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
- Ability to deal with confidential company matters
- Computer skills in MS Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint) or similar
Desired Qualifications
- Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
For Automotive OEM Project Management positions:
- Experience working in an automotive environment
- Experience working with embedded and/or mobile products
- Experience using DOORS
- Experience with CMMI or Automotive SPICE
For Aviation Project Management positions:
- Relevant knowledge, experience and/or training in avionics systems, software engineering, and/or aviation
