Job Overview: A project engineer works with other MEPF engineers to design building electrical systems.
Responsibilities and Duties
- System Design/Calculations
- Electric service load calculations
- Voltage drop calculations
- Short circuit calculations
- Lighting calculations
- COMcheck energy calculations
- One line diagrams and risers
- System Design/Drafting
- Utilize Revit 3D drafting software to layout receptacles, panelboards, equipment, lighting/control, and fire alarm devices
- Produces drawing sets
- Selects equipment, such as distribution boards and substations, light fixtures, lighting control system, and fire alarm and Vesda systems.
- Gain understanding of different electrical system design (medium voltage applications, service entrance, grounding and lightning protection systems, etc.)
- Learns outline and book specifications
- Life Safety
- Research code on required life safety and stand by loads
- Emergency power generator load calculations
- Fuel type, acoustical enclosure and space requirement for generators
- Automatic and manual transfer switches and associated components
- Emergency power one line diagram and tie-ins.
- Construction Administration
- Review of submittals and RFIs
- Attends construction meetings as required
- Sustainability
- Gain familiarity with various certifications (LEED, etc.)
- Complete LEED documentation
- Participates in sustainability meetings
- Considers energy impact when implementing designs
- Design Coordination
- Collaborates with fellow Altieri engineers of all MEPF trades to progress project design
- Collaborates with clients and contractors
- Able to identify and resolve conflicts
- Considers constructability and maintenance requirements of designs
- Client Interface
- Is an active participant in client meetings
- Responsive to client requests to provide designs within the contract agreement
- Code/References
- Use international and local building codes to inform design and calculations
- Use energy codes to inform design and calculations
- Reference NEC and NFPA to inform design and calculations
- Project Management (if applicable)
- Client Interface – primary point of contact
- Coordination – manages MEPF trades
- Financials – manages budget schedules and billing, prepares add services
- Construction / CA – oversees construction process of project
- Additional tasks as requested.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or architectural engineering, or similar field
- 4-5 years of experience
- EIT certification or PE license preferred
- Ability to communicate their technical knowledge
- A team player. Proven ability to work collaboratively both internally and externally to accomplish goals.
- Motivated to continue with their career development

- Willing to ask questions, and learns from feedback given to them
