One project coordinator position isavailable in the VCU Department of Psychology. The project coordinator will beprimarily involved with coordinating an IES project entitled “DistillingPractice Elements for School-Based Practices and Programs that Improve Socialand Behavioral Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis.” However, work on other researchprojects related to a broader research program will also be associated with theposition. The position reports to Bryce D. McLeod, PhD and Kevin Sutherland,PhD. Dr. McLeod and Dr. Sutherland’s research centers on evaluating, implementing,and sustaining evidence-based programs and practices for youth in schoolsettings. The primary project is designed to distill common elements from theliterature to support the implementation and sustainment of prevention programsin elementary schools.
Lab/Research Technicians perform avariety of routine, technical, and administrative responsibilities in supportof research at the university. They perform duties such as the following: collectingdata, preparing materials, operating and maintaining data, ordering labsupplies, and maintaining inventory. They also assist with data analysis andreport writing. They may work independently or as a member of a team. They workunder general supervision, resolving most standard issues independently andreferring complex issues to an upper-level manager. Technicians typicallyreport to a manager or director or may report to a department administrator.
Dr. McLeod and Dr. Sutherland’s researchcenters on the evaluation, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-basedprograms and practices for youth in school settings. The primary project isdesigned to usethe Distillation and Matching Model to synthesize the literature focused onclassroom-based models and practices designed to prevent or ameliorate social,emotional, and behavioral problems experienced by elementary students in orderto identify what works for whom and under what conditions. The employee acknowledge that these positions are grant-fundedand understand that the continuation of the positions depends on thecontinuation of grant funding.
Responsibilitiesinclude: Assisting the PIs in the refinement of the coding manual, studyscreening, study coding, data management, management of data staff, andscholarly presentations and publications. The project coordinator will meet regularly with the research staff toensure that the objectives of the project that will lead to achieving theresearch aims are met.
Typical Education and Experience
The successful candidate willpossess the following qualities:
•an undergraduate degree in psychology, education, or related field;
•keen attention to detail;
•demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, andstudent environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU;
•experience conducting literature searches and article screening;
•experience working with data and statistical databases (REDCap, SPSS, SAS);
•the ability to handle multiple responsibilities including daily tasks andplanning for longer-term projects;
•strong communication and interpersonal skills;
•the ability to work autonomously and within the structure of a large researchteam; and
experience managing large research projects.
