The Mediation & Professionalism Manager is responsible for the overall operations of the Council on Professionalism & Mediation, including management of the statewide mediation program for resolution of disputes between patients and providers.
Essential Functions – must be able to perform with or without a reasonable accommodation:
- Coordinate and oversee efforts of and acts as staff advisor to the Council on Professionalism & Mediation, its subcommittees, and related projects. Prepare reports for the House of Delegates and Board of Directors, as required.
- Manage coordination of all Council on Professionalism & Mediation meetings, including research, analysis, preparation and distribution of agenda and all related items. Coordinate follow-up activities as directed by the council.
- Responsible for management of mediation program, including, development and maintenance of program guidelines, coordinating recruitment, training and evaluation of mediators, and administrative management of all cases, including the filing and retention of signed settlement agreements.
- Collaborate with the council to develop and implement education activities focused on professionalism and ethics.
- Oversee the council’s disciplinary case management activities, including, but not limited to: advising local dental society ethics and membership committees, local dental society staff and leadership about handling of ethics cases; communicating with members charged with ethics violation(s) and their legal representatives; managing the disciplinary hearing process; and ensuring that timely and accurate mandatory disciplinary reports are submitted to the Dental Board of California and National Practitioner Data Bank.
- Collaborate with CDA legal counsel to provide guidance to the council during any ethics investigation and disciplinary process.
- Monitor confidential information for all mediation and ethics cases filed statewide in association management software system; ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Responsible for tracking and timely reporting of case statistics to the council and Sr. Corporate Counsel.
- Responsible for maintenance of mediation policies and procedures, and all policies related to professionalism, ethics and disciplinary action. Develop any necessary policy changes for the council to review.
- Serves as the information resource for local dental societies, CDA members, their staff, and their patients on matters related to mediation, professionalism and ethics.
- Provide high levels of customer service and professionalism in response to inquiries from dentists, patients, local dental society staff, committee members, mediators and the public regarding mediation and ethics policies, case status and case outcomes.
- Monitor and/or participate in legislative, regulatory and legal matters that pertain to dental law and ethics. Communicate such issues to the council and local dental society ethics committees for consideration.
- Leads and mentors support staff to manage and execute in their functional areas.
- Manage the operating budget for the council and all related programming, including preparation of annual budgets.
- Other duties as assigned by Sr. Corporate Counsel or the Chief Legal Officer.
Non-Essential Functions:

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years program management experience leading organizational programs, ideally in the non-profit space
- Requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Requires computer skills, including the ability to operate Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of current standards of dental care and dental terminology
- Knowledge of judicial procedure (due process), regulatory process, and the Dental Practice Act is desired
- Familiarity with the association's structure, functions, policies, programs and membership concerns and issues is desired.
- Strong leadership and the ability to articulate issues and concerns.
- Experience with mediation or other alternative dispute resolution methodologies
- Experience working with committees or boards in a non-profit organization.
- Develop and foster effective teamwork relationships.
- Must be able to make effective and persuasive presentations and speeches on controversial or complex topics to management, the council and public groups.
- Must demonstrate diplomacy and tact while interacting with all levels within and outside of the organization.
- Must be able to perform job duties independently, exercising good judgment and professionalism.
- Demonstrated ability to research and analyze legislation, regulations, and policies; write reports and business correspondence.
- Ability to develop creative programs, effectively present information and respond to questions.
