Peer Assistance Services implements two statewide programs: Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment, and the Peer Health Assistance Programs.
Screening, Brief, Intervention, and Referral to Treatment, or SBIRT, is an evidence-based early intervention practice to identify, reduce, and prevent the use of alcohol and other substances. SBIRT calls for community-based screening for health risk behaviors, including substance use. SBIRT in Colorado is a statewide program that provides training, technical assistance, and implementation support to health and mental healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, and stakeholders.
Peer Health Assistance Programs As a national movement during the 1980s, peer health assistance programs developed as an alternative to discipline for professionals with substance use disorders. Created to enhance public protection, the programs promote earlier identification and intervention before the professional demonstrated unsafe practices. Since the 1980s, the programs have evolved to include comprehensive evaluation and ongoing monitoring of health concerns that may affect professional practice. These include substance use and mental health concerns, as well as physical health concerns.
Our Peer Health Assistance Programs include evaluation, referral to treatment, monitoring the professional’s compliance with treatment, case management, and recovery recommendations to professionals who may be experiencing physical, emotional, psychological, substance use, or other personal concerns. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, Division of Professions and Occupations, contracts with Peer Assistance Services, Inc. to provide these programs, which are statutorily created and funded by license fees. The objectives are rehabilitation of the professional and protection of the public.
These are the professions who have statutorily created programs for Nurses – RNs and LPNs, Direct Entry Midwives, Dentists and Dental Hygienists, Pharmacists and Pharmacy Interns, Veterinary Professionals, Marriage and Family Therapists, Professional Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Addiction Counselors, and Unlicensed Psychotherapists.
The Peer Health Assistance Program is available on a fee for service basis to other licensed healthcare providers in Colorado who do not have a statutorily created program. These professions include physical therapists, surgical technicians/assistants, chiropractors, optometrists, nursing home administrators, podiatrists, athletic trainers, massage therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, and speech and language pathologists. About the Peer Health Assistance Program Manager Position:
Oversees the operations of the Peer Health Assistance Programs to assure compliance with the contracted statement of work with the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Management of program staff including Case Manager Leads, Case Managers, Program Coordinator, Intake Coordinator, and Quality Assurance Coordinator.
Compensation: $82,000-$88,000
Location: Hybrid
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Continuous review of, and adherence to program policies and procedures.
- Review communications from program staff to DORA including email, Board Referrals, and compliance reporting.
- Support the preparation of program and participant compliance reports.
- Coordinate the work of program consultants in collaboration with the Executive Management Team.
- Maintain relationships with DORA staff, Professional Associations, and community stakeholders.
- On-going evaluation of measurement-based monitoring, enhanced referrals, and the quality and effectiveness of participant care.
- Provide education to health and mental health professionals regarding the recognition, identification, and prevention of health or behavioral health concerns through presentations, webinars, in-services, exhibits, publications, newsletters, and program advertisements.
- Manage semi-annual Peer Education Meetings for program participants.
- Coordinates training for professionals monitoring practice of program participants. The training must establish relationships with the board and professional associations to provide help with recruitment, collaborative training, support and resources for monitors to improve the efficacy and success of the program and success for the participant.
- Maintain a list of trained, qualified monitors by specialty that have been approved by the board as required.
- Provide approved reporting documents that demonstrate evidence of maintaining a safe ongoing practice.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field is required.
Experience:
- Three years of work in the field of mental health or substance use treatment services.
- Two years of personnel management experience.
- Two years of case management experience.
- Experience conducting training and presentations.
