About the Job
The position oversees a crew of laborers in the manufacture of optical components or system by performing the following duties. Although the location of the position is in Rochester, NY, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Leads a team of employees and prioritizes work.
- Reads and follows plans, material lists and guidelines and distributes jobs appropriately.
- Fulfills all regular production duties and completes required paperwork in a timely manner.
- Ensures specific customizing demand.
- Organizes, leads and trains employees to complete products within established guidelines and time frames.
- Complies with all company policies and procedures and safety requirements, including input into crewmember discipline and documentation.
- Ensures management needs are met and maintained.
- Participates in interviews as needed.
- Advises planners of potential missed dates.
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
- Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Hourly Pay Rate Range: $28.00 to $35.00 per hour
Requirements
Physical Activities:
The employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. Work may be sedentary, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally. Employees may come in contact with but not limited to acetone and epoxy, and their work cell areas may be noisy at times. Employees entering and leaving the room must wear appropriate clothing and protective equipment such as booties, glasses and gloves.
Experience:
- 1-5 years' supervisory experience in industrial shop environment.
Education:
- High School education or equivalent
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to read and communicate in English, have basic math skills and be proficient using a computer.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical / electrical repair practices
- Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
- Advanced knowledge of operation
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
