PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The basic function and purpose of the Production Supervisor is to direct and coordinate production employees in accordance with the organization policies and applicable laws. The Production Supervisor is responsible for the achievement of goals, such as the weekly shipping schedule, through the interactions of the Group Leader and CNC machine and secondary operations technicians.
This includes continuous communication among all personnel consistent with their stipulated
assignments. The Production Supervisor is responsible for the training of personnel in accordance with the company’s program. This includes new hires and continuous training of CNC machine and secondary operations Technicians. This position is that of a hands-on Production Supervisor in that the Production Supervisor on an "as needed" basis will do a large number of tasks and duties normally performed by a CNC Machine and secondary operations Technician.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Requires an Associate’s Degree or equivalent from two-year College or technical school. (2) years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination. Must be able to perform the duties of the CNC Machine Technician.
2. Prefer a Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Manufacturing Management.
3. Three (3) years minimum experience in production for a mid-sized manufacturing company, with a minimum sales volume of $30 million.
4. The senses of sight, speech (English), and hearing are required. The physical requirements are sitting or standing the majority of the time in a manufacturing environment. Lifting of articles to a storage
location (40 pounds), twisting, bending, stooping, and the flexing of the fingers, hands and wrists in working with the PC are required.
5. Mental abilities are required to compute math formulas such as percentages, circumference and volume. The ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. A supervisor must be able to read and understand blueprints.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. The majority of the time will be spent in a plant environment with constant and medium noise and within a controlled temperature environment.
2. Working near moving parts will occasionally be necessary.
3. Working with cleaning solvents and cutting oils will be a necessary part of the job.
4. Extended hours beyond the normal week will be necessary when specific shipments are due; thus overtime will be necessary. This is a key management position and must attend scheduled management meetings before or after normal working hours.

The supervisor will be troubleshooting manufacturing problems in the machining of parts and secondary operations processes and provide guidance to the operators to efficiently resolve these problems. The interface with engineering is critical to insure proper solutions are in accordance with SOPS, work instructions and properly documented for future reference.
3. The supervisor is responsible for maintaining production to meet the shipping schedule. This can involve changing priorities on a constant basis as the situation warrants. The supervisor must keep the Manufacturing Manager informed of any situation that can delay a promised ship date.
4. Training of new hires is an important part of the supervisor’s function. Time must be made available to advance the employee through the company’s program. Progress of each employee must be monitored to insure that progress is being made on a timely basis and employees are being motivated into developing as trained CNC machine and secondary operations technicians.

1. Supervisors must plan on a daily basis the production operations to be performed and the sequencing of products needed to be worked on in order to meet the shipping schedule. This involves directing the activities of CNC machine and secondary operations technicians, and new hires in training. A production schedule is provided to the supervisor to inform them of the daily quantities needed to be produced, by each machine tool. The supervisor is expected to compile data for the tracking of production this includes the time and production records for each employee. When production is ahead or behind, priorities may need to be changed. The Manufacturing Manager and Production Control Manager must
be kept informed of all changes as soon as possible.
2. The supervisor must resolve operational or manufacturing problems in order to minimize additional costs and operational delays. CNC machine and secondary operations technicians will request their technical assistance to resolve problems and timely follow up by the supervisor is important.
3. CNC machine and secondary operations technicians are currently using Standard Operating Procedures and work instructions to inform them of the proper manner to perform the operations. The supervisor should assist engineering in revising these practices when it is necessary to ensure compliance with standards.
4. The supervisor will encounter opportunities to improve production methods, equipment efficiency or product quality. Recommendations for improvements should be made to the production manager to be documented and incorporated into SOP’s.
5. The supervisor will interview and hire new employees on an "as needed" basis. The new hire must be immediately oriented into the company’s training program. This makes effective use of the new hire’s time and prevents frustration over learning new tasks.
6. The supervisor will direct the activities of the group leader to optimize their skill and training in meeting the production schedule. This includes but is not limited to training new hires, assisting in complicated set ups and resolving operator problems.
7. The supervisor needs to inspect the machines and secondary operation processes to ensure operational performance and optimal utilization. Producing defective parts or having excessive downtime due to machine malfunctioning must be minimized. Communication of these problems to the Manufacturing Manager must be made as soon as possible.

Communication for engineering assistance will be necessary on a recurring basis.
3. Responsibility for maintaining the working area in a neat, orderly and hazard free condition is an important supervisory function. Lost time for accidents and injury needs to be prevented whenever possible.
