How You’ll Contribute The Storytelling team works to expand the organization’s impact through journalism, photography, film/video, web content, mapping, asset management, and data visualization. As one of the largest funders to individual storytellers in this work, it also identifies key grantmaking and fellowship opportunities with creative talent. Much of the team's programmatic activity is focused on identifying and building capacity for the next generation of diverse storytellers. The National Geographic Society Storytelling Division works to expand the organization’s impact through journalism, photography, film/video, web content, mapping, and data visualization. As the largest funder to individual storytellers in this work, it also identifies key grantmaking and fellowship opportunities with creative talent. The division’s Impact Story Lab builds on National Geographic’s legacy as a global leader in using storytelling to drive positive change. By combining creative excellence with groundbreaking research, we advance the field of “impact storytelling” and contribute to National Geographic Society’s mission of illuminating and protecting the wonder of our world through the production of world-class film, audio, photography, VR/AR experiences, and other media. The Production Coordinator plays a crucial role in coordinating media production for the National Geographic Society Impact Story Lab team. This position reports to the Production Manager and is responsible for assisting with keeping projects on schedule and within budget, and for supporting the daily operations of the team. Your Impact Responsibilities Legal and Accounting: Assist Production Manager in drafting, sending and keeping track of contracts, and receiving, processing, and recording all project-related invoices. This includes setting up and onboarding new vendors, requesting and paying invoices according to the contract, and processing travel expenses. (30%) Project Management: The Production Coordinator assists the Production Manager and Producers with the management of our projects’ slate. The Production Coordinator helps to keep our workflows functioning and projections on track including creating relevant documents, updating schedules and trackers, and other relevant documents.(30%) Logistical Support: Under the supervision of the Production Manager and Producer(s), the Production Coordinator assists in coordinating the impact production, pre-production, field shoots, post- production, and distribution & measurement phases of a media project. They support meeting planning, project folders creation and sharing, and new staff or contractors set up. During impact planning and pre-production, this role helps secure location permits, coordinates logistics, makes travel arrangements, and helps manage the equipment reservations and check out/check in process. During production and post-production, the Production Coordinator partners with the Associate Producer to help pull stock footage, create Legal Binders, assist with licensing, and wrap up projects. During the distribution & measurement stage, the Coordinator is responsible for festivals entry, setting up the appropriate trackers, and meeting regularly with Director and Producer(s) to support the distribution needs. (25%) Budgeting and Finance Tracking: The Production Coordinator works with Production Manager and Producers to track the costs associated with each project budget, updating actuals in production budgets based on the Finance reporting, assisting in making sure that the project stays within the approved budget. (15%) Educational Background Bachelor's degree preferred Minimum Years and Types of Experience 2+ years of media work experience Necessary Knowledge and Skills Required Production Coordinator must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to learn quickly and adapt to new situations or processes. While in-depth technical skills are not required, familiarity with media production is a plus. The Production Coordinator must be able to communicate effectively, prioritize tasks, and work well as a part of a team, with ownership over some independent tasks. The successful candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, as well as the Google Office suite. Experience with project management softwares, such as Wrike or Airtable, and Workday is strongly preferred. Supervision No Direct Reports Salary Information The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The hourly range for this position is $25.10 - $26.45.
