Senior Planner pay range:
$46.41 - $65.35 Hourly
$96,532.80 - $135,928.00 Annually
Principal Planner pay range:
$65.18 - $91.76 Hourly
$135,574.40 - $190,860.80 Annually
*This position is designated as Exempt and is not subject to overtime pay requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).*

THE POSITION
Under direction, serves as project manager for high-profile and complex mixed-use and residential development projects requiring coordination among multiple City divisions/departments, other public agencies and private enterprises; assists with division special projects; and performs related duties as assigned.
ABOUT THE PLANNING DIVISION
The Planning Division recommends and implements land use policies, processes land use applications and prepares and processes updates and revisions to the General Plan, Municipal Code, Landscape guidelines and Design guidelines. This division provides staff support to City Council, the Planning Commission, Environmental and Historical Preservation Board, and Development Review Team.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
The Community Development Department (CDD) provides a variety of development, business and property owner services. CDD administers development review and project entitlement activities, performs long range planning, and maintains the City’s General Plan. The department also performs building plan review, issues various permits and performs inspections for new and altered projects. CDD manages a comprehensive community enhancement program that includes nuisance abatement, and parking control among a host of other services. The department oversees the full service operations for Animal Services including animal care, adoption, and public safety.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Principal Planner is responsible for serving as the key City project manager for multiple high-profile and large mixed-use and residential development projects. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating project activities and operations with other City department and divisions, as well as external agencies/enterprises. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting with division special projects as assigned. Duties and responsibilities are carried out with considerable independence within the framework of established policies, procedures and guidelines.
Principal Planner is distinguished from Planning Division Manager/Planning Official in that an incumbent in the latter class is responsible for planning, managing, organizing, directing and integrating all the City’s planning programs, services and staff.
