ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Principal Firmware Engineer is a hands-on role requiring a thorough study and understanding of existing designs, in order to apply innovative engineering principles towards architecture design and firmware optimization. The position works with new product development teams to support high-value engineering activities.
The Principal Firmware Engineer will be expected to fulfill a wide breadth of roles on the engineering team, including technical lead, bug fixing, feature implementation, and leading root-cause analysis efforts, when needed.
The person in this role should be highly cross functional, and capable of leading the technical parts of a firmware program, including architecture design, workstream planning, and working with external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:
- Create, modify, and update code for new and existing products
- Drive firmware solutions for improvements and high-level plan for factory test sequence.
- Own and manage troubleshooting and debugging workstreams, and expedite completion.
- Willing to, or have experience acting as a technical lead for a team of firmware engineers, and staging work appropriately for high-level deliverables
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to team members through documentation and code reviews, knowledge sharing
- Subject matter expert on firmware toolchains, methodologies, architectures, etc.
- Cross-functional organization, communication, and management
- Reporting and presenting to senior management on project status and schedules

Personal and professional qualifications:
- 10+ years of relevant firmware development experience in one or more of the following areas: new product design and development, test engineering, manufacturing support.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-motivated, team player, with a strong desire to learn new skills and grow.
- Ability to multitask or focus on detailed problems, and tenacity to drive issues until resolved.
- Demonstrable firmware architecture design experience and strong technical troubleshooting skills
- Strong experience in the C language is mandatory, as is experience developing Python scripts to support firmware development and validation
- RTOS based firmware development experience is mandatory
- Experience with embedded microcontrollers (ARM Cortex M0-M33)
- Familiarity with security-related aspects and best practices associated with embedded system development including cryptographic algorithms, authentication protocols, secure boot, and device firmware update.
- Familiarity with low power design practices and experience developing firmware for battery-operated consumer devices
- Working with EE to bring up a PCB is mandatory
- Experience with sensors or other ICs communicating over SPI and/or I2C
- Understanding of serial communication protocols I2C, SPI, UART
- Experience in firmware version control using Git
Other requirements or beneficial knowledge:
- Previous experience with medical devices or other regulated products is desirable
- Experience with Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low-Energy
- Experience with Mynewt or Zephyr RTOS
- Experience with BuildKite or other continuous integration platforms
