Dewberry’s Raleigh, NC office includes over 200 design professionals, including a large Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Structural (MEPS) Group focused on design services for clients in North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina. Our experience includes all major healthcare systems, higher education, K-12 schools, central plants/infrastructure, and more. Raleigh’s MEPS group contains subject matter experts in leadership roles in all major professional organizations such as ASHE, ASHRAE, etc. Our repeat clients include most of the largest hospital systems, universities, and state, local, and federal government agencies. Our MEPS service line is ranked #30 Nationally among MEP Giants and our local Raleigh office is ranked #3 by size in engineering firms in the Triangle.
Because our backlog continues to grow, we are seeking a Principal Engineer - Plumbing/Fire Protection to join our Raleigh, NC office. As a Principal Engineer - Plumbing/Fire Protection, you will be responsible for providing operational and technical guidance for our design resources in all areas of work we do associated with Plumbing/Fire Protection engineering. Assist the Plumbing/Fire Protection Discipline Managers within a Business Unit/Office by providing them operational and technical guidance to help meet the client’s desires and budget. Work with a team of engineers on a variety of private, public, and federal projects. In addition to working with Plumbing/Fire Protection engineers, this individual will team with electrical, mechanical, structural, and other disciplines to provide full-range services to our local and regional clients. In short, provide operational and technical guidance associated with Plumbing/Fire Protection requirements to accomplish our commitments. Reports to the Chief Engineer.

Responsibilities:
Provide high-level direction to senior Plumbing/Fire Protection engineering staff to allow the Business Unit/Office to effectively operate and successfully complete projects:
- Office Operations: Supervise all Plumbing/Fire Protection discipline managers within an office or business unit for successful intra-office operations, by actively helping those department managers that report to you smoothly run their departments.
- Service Line Operations: Assist the Chief Engineer leading MEPS Service Line’s Plumbing/Fire Protection community of practice to ensure successful inter-office Plumbing/Fire Protection operations, by actively participating in the community of practice events and performing delegated tasks from the Chief.
- Quality Management: Ensure Plumbing/Fire Protection discipline managers are consistently applying and complying with corporate quality management processes and procedures.
- Technical Management: Ensure Plumbing/Fire Protection discipline managers are providing timely and adequate guidance and quality oversight, including code review, of all project work involving Plumbing/Fire Protection
- Staff Development Oversight: Ensure Plumbing/Fire Protection discipline managers are providing adequate technical training and development of staff by providing guidance and mentoring of managers.
- Standards Development Oversight: Ensure Plumbing/Fire Protection discipline managers are establishing and improving standards, practices, guidelines, and specifications for their Plumbing/Fire Protection discipline area. Principal shall lead the development of their office Plumbing/Fire Protection standards and coordinate those standards through the Chief Engineer across offices.
- Engineer of Record on select projects as needed.
- Provide 'on-the-spot' advice and decisions - technical and cost estimates. Principal engineer is the top Plumbing/Fire Protection in an office unless Plumbing/Fire Protection issue involves other offices in the service line then the Chief Engineer presides.
- Coordinates with client/project managers and department managers within an office to resolve Plumbing/Fire Protection engineering conflicts.
- Office Organizational Management: Assist Office/Business Unit Manager to ensure successful office operations, including advice on staff organizational structure and office procedures.
- Accomplished professional engineer (PE). Existing licensure in NC is preferred.
- Minimum 25+ years of experience.
- Experience should include technical oversight of multiple projects with proven success providing technical oversight on projects that meet contract specifications and technical standards to the client on time and within budget.
- Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
