Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of Engineering, the Principal Design Engineer will assist in the development and engineering of engines and engine systems. This individual will focus primarily on engine design, including specifications, design conceptualization, analysis, detailed engineering design, design for manufacturing & assembly, and design failure mode & effects analysis coupled with developing validation requirements. A knowledge of the installation of engines is also desired. In addition, this engineer will have a passion for engines, high performance technology, innovation, and preferably aviation.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

- Design and develop engine and airframe systems and components, starting with basic engineering analysis.
- Execute or develop requirements for analyses such as FEA, CFD, fatigue, durability, and engine performance simulation and optimization.
- Design for manufacturability & assembly knowledge together with a working knowledge of design failure mode & effects analysis coupled with developing validation requirements.
- Proactively communicate with design & development engineers, drafters, suppliers, and program managers to optimize engine design, reliability, and performance at the lowest cost.
- Select appropriate materials and processes considering performance, longevity, reliability, and cost.
- Remain current with the latest materials, technologies, and trends regarding engine engineering and development.
- Design for the lowest manufacturing cost consistent with reliability, performance requirements, and FAA certification standards.
- Develop and create design standards and protocols for validation activities; analyze test results.
- Perform stack up tolerance analysis to ensure designs are suitable for fit, form & functional expectations.
- Design for Six Sigma using DMADV methodologies.
- Prepare drawings utilizing ASME drafting standards and GD&T application.
- Ability to manage projects to successful completion as well as coach and mentor junior staff members.
Qualifications
Required
- BS, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from four-year University.
- 10+ years of appropriate engine engineering experience.
- Proficient with analytical and simulation tools.
- Proficient with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD modeling.
- Rapid prototyping experience.
Preferred
- Member of SAE or other appropriate organization.
- Advanced Engineering degree or certification.
- Six Sigma Green Belt.
- Experience with Compression Ignition engines.
- Concept and/or prototype engineering experience.
- Passion for engines, high performance technology, innovation, and aviation.
- Knowledge of FAA certification regulations.
Working Conditions
This position is a professional engineering position, yet combined with occasional “hands-on”, assisting technicians working through challenges on the engine(s).
